quicksand IN passing

Now forgive me, but folk here still has yet to supersaturate his brain cells such that they are inundated with lipofuscin granules or to the point of rupturing liposome’s filled and releasing hydrolytic enzymes in my brain. I know I may have a bazaar taste in literature and that I have yet to read Tru to the game or Fly Girl, but truth is that I have read a nice coterie of books.

One that I have thought of recently in jest was Nella Larsen’s Quicksand and Passing (Looks like Cap-city huh). Nella Larsen (1891-1964) was a writer of the famed Harlem renaissance (yawl would love this book). She used vivid imagery and classic symbolism and penned stories of the 1920s on the issues of racial identity, classism, and sexuality and of particular importance, `passing,' – you know black folk light enough to pass for being white. I am reminded of this because I have wanted to get this off my chest for some while and because Former US congressman Bob Barr was selected by the Libertarian Party as its candidate for November's presidential election.

Historically, I have always had love for folk; he was never really GOP-esque if you looked at his voting record outside of the 2nd amendments. Not to mention his vehement protection of this amendment may be one of the factors that engendered me to me out side of being able to tell he was a well read mutha shut yo mouth.

Many in the GOP are upset because think it will do major damage to the candidacy of the Republican presupposed nominee John McCain. With them, I agree. Now back to the point. I have always looked and Jones on CSPAN and always felt he was a brother. From the way he spoke to the way his body motions evinced themselves. Now I am sure of it.

I think deep in his heart he is trying to help his race by taking votes away from McCain such to put his Brother, Barack Obama in the Whitehouse. Like I said before, I may either have too many brain cells or not enough. What says you on my recent dialectical rumination?

  6. not sure if dude is passing or not. he looks like he might have some Negro blood up in there, but most Southerners have a mixture of White/Black due to that funny thing called slavery.

and on Larsen, i have a limited edition, out-of-print version of her work. yay me! lol

  7. If I were you I wouldn't worry about having too few brain cells. :-) I just recently heard of Bob Barr. He may be Black at that. I have a friends who's got a son about his complexion with blue eyes. Ya just never know!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ha ha!!! I think you're right! And I didn't know who the hell he was, but yeah, he's black. Or a derivative thereof. And to The Prisoner's Wife... It only takes a few drops of "black" to BE black... least that's what they used to say... that's why they hide it so. You know, like Anatole Broyard. Who your man favors. There's something about the "hue"...

At my last job there was this chick, who I knew on sight was "passing'. The thing was... I don't even think she knew she was "passing", cuz she made a big deal of vehemently denying her "passingness" which was hard to do... cuz homegirl had some serious hair going on, despite her pale pale skin and her bright blue eyes. She swore she was just generic "white" but there was something about her body that was awfully familiar. She resembled some cousins of mine. (My grandfather, God rest his soul, called them "The White Mice Children").

She stayed far far away from me, too... as if she felt that if she associated with me with folks would assume that she was like me.

My old boss, a self-titled cracker from Alabama, would crack up every time I called her out to him. Cuz he thought so, too. And I was more than certain she was of African descent when she packed up and quit her job... and moved back "home" to North Carolina. Where some of *my* peeps are from...

  10. Aww sh*t now! You're appealing to the English major in me!

I loved 'Quicksand' and 'Passing'. Have you read 'The Ways of White Folks' by Langston Hughes?

I bet a lot of our 'white' brothers and sisters would really be shocked if they found out they were the rsul of someone 'passing'.

  12. I knew a girl who is interracial but left her family to live as a white girl. The brothers married black. They are all really light and the sister had blue eyes and sandy hair. She hated having to live around black people.
She hit 18 ran off with a white guy and has been white ever since.
I recently saw her with her child and what looked like a new white man. She looked like at me with a kind of look that read don't come over.
    I didn't want to anyway.
I am interracial and use to deny I had white in me. (How many times do you hear of people doing that?)
    I love being black.

  14. T,

I love well thought out conspiracy theories. You certainly worked this one.

First of all, about Nell Larson's works. I have read Passing a couple of times. Now you are going to have me in pursuit of Quicksand, which I have not read. But as soon as I find a copy of this book, it will be on.

Now to the conspiracy theory. I love it when a plot unfolds and it makes you go, Oh, no you didn't!

I looks to me like Bob Barr has a healthy tan to his complexion. I have some bloodline folks who look like white people but they are not. But, I think you may be stretching it just a bit with this one. However, you get snap ups for the creativity of effort.

If Bob Barr is going to give Flipper McMadness the blues, I am all down with that idea period. So I say, Run Bob Run! Give 'em hell and upset the elephant drawn cart with your bid!

  16. T: He does sort of resemble Percy Sutton with hair.

I'm kind of with you on Barr. He always struck me as a kind of bright yet weird sort of person, and I'm somehow not surprised that after leaving the House his first stop was the ACLU and his next the Libertarian Party. Of course, I'm hoping that Obama wins it, but if given a choice of Barr or McCain, I'm with Barr in heartbeat. I'll give the guy credit for being a human being. Once he figured out that being a Republican wasn't necessarily the same as having the keys to the kingdom, he wised up quick.

Man, the off-candidates are really strong this year with Barr, McKinney and Nader. Nader's a perennial but Barr and McKinney both have long House records and were very much front benchers of their parties.

A story I heard out of Vegas regarding the Department Of Homeland Security has turned my skin green and has made be ecstatic that I left when I did. If McCain gets elected, free-thinkers will look upon the George W. Bush years as some kind of golden age of progressivism so it is essential for Obama to win this. That means, yes indeed, he's got to get Clinton on the ticket and avoid the Jim Webb trap they're setting for him.

Webb is military and all and Americans eat that up, but the problem is that McCain is such a vicious campaigner and Obama is such a careful campaigner, that when McCain goes after Obama for not having served in the military, Webb would do the reflexive military thing in which one always sides with other veterans and needs some kind of chain of command and defer to McCain, leaving Obama twisting in the wind.

The Southern conservative guy thing will not cut it for an Obama VP choice. He needs a loyal Democrat who can help in both Florida and Appalachia. I think the supporters of each of the Democratic candidates are far crazier than the two candidates themselves are. You could say of both Clinton and Obama that they are two of the brightest polticians going and on the issues of importance to me I can't find any difference. Whatever's going to happen has probably been decided and I'm sure by now Obama and Clinton are far more respectful of each other than their respective fans are.

Besides, the Obama/Clinton ticket would absolutely ass-fuck the McCain-Pawlenty ticket.

If Obama picks someone like Webb or Kaine in an effort to peel off White Male voters he's going to get buried. Democrats often offer choices of the "fake Republican" too often for their own good and the "real Republican" wins.

I don't think anywhere in the world could survive a couple of months of McCain, let alone a potential 8 years.

  17. Pretty cool tribute. You are so darn cool. I'm glad to be included in the blog amnesty! Not totally sure how I earned it, but hey, I'm sure not complaining!

    ReplyDelete
  18. OK, me again. Now that I'm thinking, granting someone amnesty maybe means that they have done something that deserves a pardon... So that's not a good thing, if you mean it in that sense. (Or maybe I you think I have the potential to do something in need of amnesty?) Not too sure about this now. Well, whether it's a positive or a negative,I still think you're an awesome writer.

  19. I'm not familiar with her work but I may have to check it out.

I'm all too familiar with passing though. I dated a guy whose mother was "passing" or so she thought, it was a sad sad sight it really was. They adopted so that her genes wouldn't pop back up.

I got blonde haired blued eye black cousins by the dozens but they've never tried to pass although when I asked my Auntie why not, she said that she'd rather live her life with her head up than in shame.

  20. Since I think you are hella cool, I went to check out the brother(s) at pimpin' pens. Songs about smoking blunts, huh? Interesting. You know the cop in me does not approve. LOL. The indiviual in me says to each his own. Doesn't change my impression of my brother one bit.

  23. Immoral Matriarch- I was wondering what blog amnesty was too. lol

Dude, you always have the most insightful posts. Never disappointed. I'm not that familiar with Bob Barr so I can't comment on him directly but I am not convinced his candidacy will have much impact on the republican party. Folks already have their minds pretty much made up and I'm not sure Mr. Barr has what it takes to make an impact at all.
