i want the pink one

A woman told me recently, you don’t mess with a daddy’s girl. It made me smile and the simper was so warm that folk here could have burnt the sun. I was hoping she was right and in my optimism got even warmer.

Maybe that why she is the way she is. Why she reaches out for me while in her mother’s embrace, or why when she sees me gazelle like, she jumps in my arms. Or why every times she pretends her phone rings she answers “Brain cell; or sit down with her toy laptop on her legs telling me she ordering dogfood too. Yep, maybe, in the rambunctious recalcitrance she gleams, I just smile and say yes or ok.

So I guess I got the best of both world, guess my sperm work like that. First Born is my number one son. Fellas, gotta get you one of them. Second born, baby girl, fellas you gotta get you one of them too.

Especially the latter, I mean the way she crawls on me, lays her head on my shoulder when she is my arms, even how she sleeps in my lap – can u say the bomb. And I really love it when she say “naw folk, we don’t get down like that” or “nothing jones” or “that’s my song.” So fellas, I don’t know what gives. I mean love your kids, I don’t care if they momma crazy or you crazy. Nurture that spirit which has originated from your loin for love sake, and make no excuse and let no obstacle get in your way for doing such.

Cause if u true, learn to live the love in the experience of buying your baby girl cupcakes with pink icing just because she say “I want the pink ones.” I guess money and the economy aint everything. vote

  2. [And I really love it when she say “naw folk, we don’t get down like that”]

    How cute!

Som eof my fave moments are with my bro and he ain't even my kid. Like when I caught him climbing around some boxes and he was whispering to himself '"be careful little boy, be careful."

I thought my heart would melt.

  3. Torrance one of the most precious sights to behold is a black man interacting with his daughter. Kudos to you! I love it.

  4. Talk that talk Papi! I am feelin' all of your descriptions of parenthood for both the man-child and daddy's little girl. My two daughters are 15 and 11 years old ... so I don't seem to get the gazelle-like leaps any more ... but, they will both be daddy's little girl forevermore...

  12. It is crazy that you wrote this. I went to bible class this morning. We have men only meetings every third Saturday. Anyway, the lesson today was how a man should be a father to his children. I was actually going to blog about it. I think that's tight that you are a stand up cat. It is so important that we have strong black models for this generation. I'm not sure if you reading my spot at the time, but check this out, I think you would enjoy it...http://gentlemenstandard.blogspot.com/2008/07/angelic.html.

Take the advice guys. I know baby mama drama is a biotch, but deal with it, cause in the long run its well worth it.

Your daughter is beautiful, must take after her mom. lol just joking.

  18. And damn it feels good to see other parents up on it! In all it's rawness, parenthood is awesome. And it deserves nothing less than our "A" game.

  26. Love this blog posting, Torrance, absolutely love it! :) Interestingly enough Skeptical Brotha just wrote one on fathers/sons and you both have me heading back to that incredible urge to FINALLY finish classes for my teaching credential. (Just need those Lotto numbers to come through for that. ;)) There is NOTHING like the feeling you get when a younger one looks to YOU to just help them "be"--to help explain the world around them, to help them understand their feelings, to mimic you, to stretch your boundaries (and your patience ;)). They come to us with such innocence, but with such sheer joy and curiosity about life, and the way they help US see life through THEIR eyes--magical, just magical. (Never mind what they teach us, without even trying! :))

Since I don't have kids of my own (well, my 4-legged, furry boy IS my kid, but...), it's working with children, and spending time with my young nephews, that keeps me in a similar place to the one you so fondly described for all of us. What a lucky young "pink cupcake" gal she is for having a daddy that adores her. You'd think with two dads--"real dad" and "step-dad"--I'd have found that daddy's girl thing, but didn't. I was fortunate, though, to be a "grampa's girl", and even though he's been gone for years, he's still with me in everything I do--especially my smart ass writing. ;)

Thanks for sharing a bit of your life, Torrance. :)

  30. Hey Brother!

This was simply beautiful....they are blessed to have such a loving dad...I pray your love of fatherhood rubs off on those who neglect their duty to raise up their children in the way they should go....I pray when I get married and have children my husband will love our kids just as much as you love yours. That's what's up!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hey I'm new to your site but i've been reading some of your old post esp the ones on fatherhoodd. I just wanna say I think your blog is amazing and the love you show for your children displays (sadly) something i'm not used to seeing A REAL MAN and a REAL FATHER.
I pray that when i do have kids its with a man who regards fatherhood in the same fashion as you.Anyways i gotta go back to reading your old entries. Keep up the great work =)

  32. Awww...this made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

I love reading posts from a gushing dad. Especially when it is obvious that he is feeling a real moment of love for his babies.

I did not have girls. I do now. I just spent the day with them and my little fella. It is still amazing to me that I am now a grandmother. Even more amazing is the transitions that my little boys have gone through because of their daughters and son. They are responsible and caring which makes me feel pretty good as their mother.

I hope and pray that all of our children feel loved and well cared for. This is a crazy world and a whole lot of things are going on and will continue to do so.

But the unconditional love that we give and receive from our children makes this place a lot more enjoyable.

Have a good week T, may you and yours be blessed.

  33. ....isn't that just the cutest? In a few years you'll be able to put up a sign on your store: "Braincell - by All-mi-T and daughter" ;)

Our little one is a total daddy's girl too.. I was too.. and my sis in law was too.. I'm starting to see a pattern here.. *lol*

    Greetings from the netherlands!

p.s. "naw folk, we don’t get down like that" - how sweet would that sound coming out of a little girl like that! :D

  34. I'm a the only man in my house, and I'm surrounded by 4 beautiful women (including my wife of course). Sometimes they get on my nerves, even down to the 1yr old. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I think I'm a beter person for it.

  38. Torrance that's some real shit there...daddys far and wide need to take heed. I often wonder how on earth my son's fathers can be okay with missing those cute little moments the boys have...their radiant shine...athletics...academics...and all those wonderful things about them that are the key ingredients to their individual personalities. How could they not want to witness those tiny threads of themselves which were woven into those dapper young men???

It will remain a mystery to me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love to hear, and I love to see men with their children. I have two boys and the pride I feel is ridiculous. It's like I'm sexist, because I feel like lioness because of my men.

  48. I just started reading your blog and your post made me all sniffly. Every little girl should have a daddy.

Your little princess will go out into the world and demand the love and respect from men that she got from her daddy. That is a forever gift and a wonderful thing.

  50. Very sweet. It is always nice to see a good dad being dad. All they want is your love, that's it. Your baby girl is a little beauty and she obviously looks up to you and can potentially take over the business one day. That's the way it should be. I wish you a lovely day.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm so glad I got a chance to stop by today!! How ya doing? Missed ya!!

And I am a bonafide Daddy's girl. Well at least I used to be. I hate that we kind of drifted apart as I grew up. It's both of our faults tho. Plus he's busy raising my kid brother, so I mean...But I love my daddy, and I know that he'll do whatever to make sure I'm happy. He's the one always making sacrifices and bending over backwards for his kids. And that's how it should be.

Your little girl is adorable!! Great post!

  63. You've got some great kids, huh? Little girl is so cute. You know what? Nothing really matters except the kids. Really. When I get all caught up in my own worries I get all stressed out, but one great cure is to just take 10 minutes and curl up with a kid and read a silly book together. Then the nasty old world doesn't look quite so bad anymore.

  66. omg your daughter is so beautiful! all the things you were saying about her remind me of how I used to be w/my father growing up. To this day my mom brings up this story from when I was like 4 lol...she asked me if her and my father were to ever seperate who I would go w/and I said daddy lol. of course as I got older I decided if that were to occur that I'd go with whichever one wasn't the cause of the seperation, or I'd stay w/a relative so I didn't have to choose lol, but I was DEF a daddy's girl. this post has inspired my blog for today...thank u...im about to write it as soon as i get some tea!
