  4. torrance, you wrote:

"Im supposed to list my 25 writers that have influenced me the most."

    Influenced? How?

Quality of content? Writing style? Outright enjoyment of their work?

  5. Are you familiar with Donald Goines??? His style was influenced by Iceberg Slim. If not, I'll put you up on game.

  9. With at least a thousand (I think you've said) in your library, was it difficult to list just 25?

  10. I read this a second time and realized I have no clue what tagging means or why it matters but then I rarely understand what bloggers or gamers are talking about.

Here are some words for all of you. Have a wonderful day and spread a little surprise, wonder and good will where ever your day takes you.

    Blessings

  11. torrance, I must say it surprises me your list omits Ralph Ellison. He's number-one among black writers.

  16. Here's the question -- is there a black writer who writes fiction and non-fiction about black life the way Tom Wolfe (The Right Stuff, Bonfire of the Vanities) covers the white experience?

  17. Anais Nin is the nuts. I defy anyone to read DELTA OF VENUS and not be good to go. Surprised to read here that a lot of men aren't into her writing. Any man who hasn't discovered her yet is a lucky man who's in for a big treat.

The three overlooked American master fiction writers are Nelson Algren, Flannery O'Connor and John O'Hara.

No Garcia Marquez? It's all great stuff if you know nothing about Colombia. If you know something about Colombia, you get why his talent is SICK. Imagine reading THE CRUCIBLE in the 1950s but in novel form, much more densely packed and elaborate and you'll see why AUTUMN OF THE PATRIARCH set in the future with no characters drawn to represent any specfic person IS a perfect representation of 1970s Colombia, strong shades of which prevail today. Better in Spanish if you can read it. If not ONLY read the Rabassa translation.

Late 19th-century social realism doesn't do it for you other than Russian, eh? For my money, top two are Dickens and Galdos. Well, OK, you mentioned Doyle but the Sherlock Holmes stories are really more philosophy than literaure.

Fiction of Ratiocination should really be its own category, though. Chandler, Hammett, Walter Mosley, James Ellroy (though I think the latter two lose something in plot and style by obsessively evoking a period from decades in the future), Ruth Rendell for general weirdness, and maybe the best of all is Richard Price who wrote a ton of TV and movie crime scripts but only two mystery novels, CLOCKERS and FREEDOMLAND. In whatever genre, Price hasn't really published or had mounted BAD fiction. Unblemished record.

In the category of ONLY one perfect novel and OUT are Zora Neale Hurston, J.D. Salinger and John Kennedy Toole and you can make a case for Vincent Patrick.

  18. Wait a minute, I thought black folk were only supposed to read other black folk!

you know where this respectable negro stands on that nonsense.

  20. I LOVE reading but I read so much RANDOM stuff that there are only a few writers that actually influence me as a person today. I'll do your tag and list my little handful though LOL

  21. TOORRANCE/NO_Slappz: Saul Bellow, Salvador Dali and Tom Wolfe are (were) three exceptional artists who each in his way ADVANCED his genre forward and changed the way a lot of people thought about art and literature. YET DID IT FROM A THOROUGHLY RIGHT-WING PERSPECTIVE.

  22. kelso,

I did not mention Saul Bellow, though I admire his work.

Wolfe is in my top ten favorite writers.

Salvador Dali, as far as I know, never wrote anything except checks.

Meanwhile, I am reading Richard Price's Lush Life now.

  23. It seems that we have 25 totally different authors on our lists (smile). I did go ahead and add my post about the 25 authors that have influenced me on my blog.

    Thanx for asking...

  24. Thanks brother. I'm not fond of tags either, but I liked this. Great list. Frederick Douglass? Cool, he is one of my favorites in history. I visit his home in DC often. I have some pictures that I will post soon. Take care. Peace~
