bling 4 a king

I am not ashamed to say it but to me, most folk who seek fame over character have little or no integrity and low self-esteem. This is particularly true by my speculation for entertainers and athletes.

Many of us know that we are in a very different era in America. For the first time, a man that looked like me is being honored via a memorial in Washington, DC and his name is Martin King Jr. I look very highly at Dr. King, not only for his astuteness as a scholar, or the fact that he is like myself, an alumnus of Morehouse College, or even his letter from a Birmingham jail, but because with all of is faults, he was a man of character and integrity.

People say that we need to support the memorial to Dr. King and I agree. They are holding concerts and asking for loot left and right. I just don’t know why it is so hard for us to get the loot we need with all of this so-called new money in our community. So I just say this as a challenge. I Mean, I would like for folks to show me they aint fuck boys and want to be gangsters. So this is to you, TI, Lil Wayne, 50 cents, Nelly, Young Joc and Young Jeezy – represent like men do for what is great and what is right. Give up your chains and bracelets or at least one for the King. What’s the matter, are you to selfish to give up some bling for the king? So represent, or continue to risk nobody’s like me calling yawl fuck boys. And that’s what yawl are, if you don’t stand for the betterment of our historical legacy as opposed to being greedy and selfish.

Good ish..I've been wondering the same thing. This memorial for Dr. King has been in the works for years. I can't fathom why the money still isn't there. I truly hope that blak entertainers have been donating anonymously to this cause, though I doubt that is the case. I'd apprciate public funding because it would inspire others to donate, but I feel at least donating anonymously would aid the situation.

Thanks, you just gave me inspiration for a post. I was thinking about it for a while, but now I'm going to go forward with it.

I have to admit that I have certain level of disdain for our commercial hip-hop celebrities, black entertainers and pro-athletes. Watching them play with their high-priced toys at the expense of their supporters and communities is embarrassing and disheartening. I always wonder, how much is enough when it comes to earning money and superficial status and accolades. I also wonder how much of this is our fault (as a community). Thanks for the post.

Def good ish.

Can you believe this is the first time I've read the letter from jail? I can't understand why there is no money for MLK. Hell, even I'd donate some of the little money I have. If I was a rapper, I'd donate like crazy. It appears they'd rather give it to Jacob.

Just a thought most rappers "bling" is borrowed, so they really can't give that up. :)

But sadly I think the average person has forgot (put aside maybe) the influence MLK has had on this country. That being said unless a Celebrity goes all out and makes a big deal the general public won't care.

Thanks for stopping by over at my place, T. I appreciate the kind words.

I think, in all cultures, there's less and less of a reverence for history. A lot of folks just dismiss whatever got them to a better place than they would have been without some serious sacrifices from others. It's a shame, for sure.

Unfortunately all entertainers, as well as athletes are part of the system that divert our attention from the bullshit our politicians try to feed us. Everyone should ante up, but it is especially troubling that prominent black entertainers that have "overcome" have forgotten that 45 years ago they would have no opportunity to succeed if it weren't for strong black men like Martin.

Pay homage.

Dis is TOO TRUE! Anyone have connections to Michael Baisden? Maybe he & other radio personalities can CALL them all OUT! If folx can rally for 6 in Jena can they rally for a Brother who sacrificed so much for so many?

Say it and say it all RDB! It's often funny to me that rappers will dedicate lyric after lyric to racial, albeit soci-political injustices, but fail to get up off their blessed-assurances to act on it. Problem is (my take), is that most rap artists are hustler's and most hustlers don't want in on the invitational deal, in fact, won't often subscribe to business ventures unless their arrogant asses though it up first. Same issue I have with the church community; unless we're the one's doing it, we ain't doing it. Good blog.

Oh, and if you're cool, I just had to link you to my site. Thanks for visiting by the way. I'm most humble.
