lucky # 6

I know a lot of folks up in arms over what happened a year ago around this time in Jena, Louisiana. I am too; I’m just upset that stories like this don’t get coverage on Nancy Grace or Larry King, not even Montel. But what would one expect?

Based on this, it is obvious that O.J. Simpson stealing his own shit back (if such is possible) is more important to white news media outlets – yep I said it WHITE. So I suspect that means what I am about to introduce now, albeit I feel the average reader knows about it, will be on television around next year (2008) this time.

Last week, Megan Williams (in hospital bed photo) found out first hand what it means to be ignored and treated like a chattel. And according to police, it’s likely that it all was the result of her being an African American woman. The 20 year-old was forced to eat animal feces and to lick up blood. She was also sexually assaulted, made to drink water from the toilet and had her hair pulled out. In addition to the aforementioned, she was repeatedly called nigger while her captors beat and stabbed her. In total, Megan was stabbed four times and had been choked with a cord, according to allegations.

She was found by authorities about 35 miles southwest of Charleston, West Virginia. The six suspects who have been arrested and charged are: 1] Frankie Brewster, the 49-year-old woman who owns the home where the alleged attacks occurred, who said he was alone when authorities noticed Williams calling for help, 2] Bobby R. Brewster, 24 (in picture), 3] Karen Burton, 46, 4] her daughter Alisha Burton, 23, of Chapmanville, 5] George A. Messer, 27, and 6] Danny J. Combs, 20. The charges range from, sexual assault and malicious wounding to kidnapping, and assault during the commission of a felony. Last I heard, all are in custody based on a $100,000 bail each. O.J. had to post $125,000 in contrast and he didn't stab or rape or choke nobody.

I say this because it seems that I uncover something everyday that upsets me and turns my stomach and makes me feel as if I wish had some Toussaint's, Demark Vessey’s and David Walker’s around this camp with me to handle what needs to be handled. But the reality is that we care more about making the Band, Music Video’s or America’s next top Model, or Monday Night Football to really care, or else it would’t take so long for us to attend to such issues?

So don’t be surprised if Ms. Williams story don’t get on the radio or in or ears until another 365 days. I just wonder what is I about the number six, that’s means trouble for folks that look like me?

God, this case really did turn my stomach. I'm pissed about Jena, but this woman is an even sadder case. Where is her justice why aren't we fih=ghting for her, hell why don't most of us know about her.

The religion of America is material wealth and celebrity news. Talk about this atrocity and it falls on deaf ears. Try to have a serious debate about the upcoming election and nobody cares. But tell the media they can no longer report news on Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, or O.J. (a black man who made it rich AND married a white woman) and all hell will break loose because you are offending the religion of America. The O.J. media coverage is just a down low warning to white girls to never trust a brother no matter how much money he has.

Why are people so obsessed with celebrity? Well, a lot of Americans erroneously feel capitalism will afford them the same opportunities as celebs, so in a way, they are celebrities in the making. They can't really hate because they just know they're next with fame and fortune. Then there are the ones who really have no lives of their own and live through them vicarously. And when they fail in wealth, love, and their careers, it makes some feel better with their own failures.

The story you posted is definitely a sad tale that brings me to anger. However, because I am so desensitized, it does not surprise me. It would take something like 9/11 to surprise me these days. Hate brews and waits to manifest itself in so many people it would make your head spin.

i read about this a few days ago. i heard about this from a black woman's message board.

its sad that this doesn't make the news, but if britney spears sneezes we hear about it on fox news, cnn, usa today, etc.

i just hope justice is served in this case (ie. life terms).

this was playing on cnn, which i watch all damn day at work. but youre right about nancy, who i also have to endure. no mention of jena or this story, but i gotta watch oj coverage like i truly give a damn. i always go to fark.com for my news, so i get a wide range instead of repetitive bull.

Hey Torrance, thanks for stopping by Ramblings...appreciate the love...and boo you know like I know that they tell the stories about us they want to tell...and surely if the racial identities had been reversed it would have been slashed and splashed all over the pages....ant all the talking heads would have been talking...

I read about this on another blog, and was heartsick to hear about it. I hate that the media covers such trivial shit instead. I'm so tired of Britney and Paris that I could puke.

I'm sorry, why is her name public knowledge? Can she walk down the street now without people knowing her life story?

her mom gave permission so folks will know tha she is real and she said she wanted the world to see what evil is and does

TV is the Trojan horse of our century - it merely distracts & disintegrates while REAL crap is going on around us!
I agree w/ Ma'at...as angry as I am about the Jena 6 I'm saddened, angered & frustrated by the fact that our "leaders" of color are also media hounds who want to be where the best coverage is....

i do what i can where i can and live a quiet, anonymous life as my ancestors did...to quote Brother Sterling Brown: "strong men, getting stronger..."

I find it amazing how we as a race pick and choose what battles to fight, Yes Im upset with the judicial system down in Jena but this happens all across the nation everyday and there is little done about it, however, I feel upset that this story has been pushed aside! I do believe the media feeds into this as well as they pick and choose which stories appeal to the nation, however, since many do not realize reading is fundamental, of course they will miss this story. I want to know do they plan to protest for the right of this woman and also how many of people who are marching today are actually registered voters???

Fergie said...

I did hear about this story it has been on the news a bit here, but definately not enough press. I just hope all the marching and awareness that is going on down in Jena today doesn't end today. This needs to me a movement, and not an event.

This case is absolutely outrageous. I agree that this is where our time would be much better spent than tracing Paris' every moment in jail, including whether or not she ate lunch and news about her damn rash. Ya hear that Nancy Grace?

I've pretty much banned CNN channels for now because I am so damn tired of hearing about OJ.

MSNBC has covered this story extensively and while race is most likely the motive behind this crime the woman was also mentally disabled which adds to the heinousness of the crime.

Three brothers kidnapped, raped, tortured (electric cattle prods in the anus) and murdered a mentally retarded man back in 2001 here in Massachusetts and it received very little local coverage, never mind national coverage (It was pre-all knowing-internet, but when I Googled the case I found next to nothing). I hate to say it, but if this woman were not black, we may not have heard about this act at all.

The mentally retarded are considered sub-human to most people.

That does not diminish the severity of the crime and the fact that these perpetrators should, if found guilty, be subject to the same beating and torture when they go to prison.

Dee said...

gee thanks Mom
now she can be a victim instead of a person for the rest of her life. Everywhere she goes, people will be saying in hushed tones behind her "isn't that Megan Williams"?

It's acts like this that make a brother want to revert to past behavior and smash on these fools, however they will get their just do,Karma is a bitch.

and yo, it aint about race, i want to maketha clear. i just want this shit to work lke the say, black, white, green, blue. Thier bail should have been more than OJ's, and the case more important than OJ, and any human being will fel me when i say let the penality fit the crime, just like in Jena. and white, black, yellow, red can agree on this if they human beings. If black folks had done, I may not have writen about it, but i'd want them to get the punishment they deserve

I wrote a post about this case, and the other Black cases in the media this week.

And Im with David Sullivan when he said that we might not have heard about this case either, cause the woman is mentally defficient.

Unfortunately, we know this case won't get the publicity it deserves and so I am left to wonder inmany cases like this one, ho much more inhuman and racist events have taken place that we have never and will never know about. Thank you for your coverage of the story

VAR said...

Seems like they trying to kil this story and remove the sympathy factor by revealing that she wrote some bad checks. We're supposed to care less about her because of that... I doubt this will get much coverage. Definitely aint heard about it here in LA.

Powerful post!

I first heard about this on the news. I have to admit that very little about what White folks are doing and have done to Black people surprises me...but hearing about this definitely shocked me. Shocked me so much, I couldn't deal with it...didn't even want to talk about it. I was so disgusted for her!

This is yet another item that is being burried by a trivial news item - like britney flashing the cameras for yet another time!

Thanks for addressing this bro. I mentioned it on my blog last week, but it seems that people really didn't take notice to it. It's appalling that some members of the Jena 6 had higher bail then these criminals. Sometimes I wish we had some of those types (Vesey, Brown) around to put a shock in America.

The muthafucka's who did that, should be put in general population with some brothers who were handed newspapers covering the story. Black Guards, Black Warden, everybody turn their backs and walk away.

That's some good justice right there.

Hey Torrance,

I thought I'd lost you for a minute. How's things going?

I'm glad this shit is finally coming to the forefront it was reported once last year and never heard anything about it until radio personalities kept it up. Being from Louisiana it did make me mad, but being a black woman seeing that picture of Megan damn near brought me to tears. White American need to check them selves.

Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving the nice comment!

I have to say that I like your blog...wow! I think I'm going to add you to my blog as my writer friend!

I know you speak alot of truth about the evils going on in the world. I guess I get so tired of all the negative things in the world and just make cards.

Oh well, I will be back

hey dr. stephens!!...nice read...i guess i have no faith or expectations of the media to report anything at all...they often repeat the same news throughout the day and are very selective about the crap they publish...half their stories are ridiculous and just make me question their validity...
...that said, i am more disappointed in the so-called black leaders...the naacp, al sharptons, etc. are all a joke to me...they sheepishly follow and do exactly what society expects them to do...duh they are going to jump on the jena6 case...even then, how imaginative has their response been?...ooh, ooh, ooh...i have an idea teacher...let's wear black and rally!!...well no shit!...what people fail to realize is that times have changed...what may have been effective in the 60s or 70s obviously don't work anymore...how many rallies and protests have there been for this war in iraq and still, the us is in iraq...and these are white people protesting and rallying...how much more for some negros?..they expect us to do just that and just go cover it on abc, cnn and whatever 'news outlet'...until we as a black community begin to be more creative and really push the envelope, unafraid of the consequences, as our ancestors did, we will continue in this mediocracy, not improving the situation...we shouldn't have to rely on word of mouth and emails from each other to spread news like this...furthermore, this type of shit really should not be happening...i won't even touch on the lack of humanity inherent in such acts...its 2007 for Christsakes...but when the naacp would rather protest and rally around asinine causes like michael vick's sentencing, instead of trying to make black people's right to vote more than an act approved some every odd years, its no wonder...
...i've started to wonder if maybe some of these so-called black leaders haven't been paid off to keep the black masses calm...they meet with government officials and discuss the issues...the government has given them guidelines regarding what issues to address and how to do so...they receive their monthly allowance and we get to wear black all day and march around various new cities, maybe write a few irate letters and blogs and have our so-called leaders on tv, reciting the pre-written and pre-approved by government speeches, naysaying the atrocity...
...and what do we do?..we don't even challenge them to do better and rally against true issues...we don't hold them accountable...accountability is no longer relevant...i guess we are equally culpaple...we shake our heads, some of us wear black and march...others of us go to work and don't complain too much and pray in church that it doesn't happen to our family...we just trying to 'live' afterall...don't want to rock the boat too much...che said it but i guess we forgot or didn't listen cause he wasn't black...whatever...mediocracy and the lack of creativity is a bitch...that was long...sorry...i guess i should have just blogged that huh?:)...

Thanks for stopping by. It is up to shine a light on this case whenever possible - perhaps we need to press Nancy Grace into covering it. She is normally on top of cases involving women and children - why not this one.
