swaggot

I have come to accept unfortunately that the American citizen is under assault from a virus. No not the Swine flu, but rather the incessant use of the word SWAG. In fact I would be willing to propose that SWAG is likely the most over used word in our streets today.

First I don’t know what swag is. When I ask folk they give me words that we already have in the dictionary inclusive of confidence and assertiveness. The way I see it, the word reminds me of Canines and not as in teeth but rather dogs, for dogs are the only animal that I see regularly in these streets wagging their tail. Not to mention the word SWAG (if it is a word) rhymes with wag.

I also believe that if a person has to walk around and proclaim that they have confidence or are assertive then they are neither. And actually believe that it is an artificial high folks give themselves via the things they own, fake materials because they were born with and have very low self esteem. Not to mention confidence is consistent and one is always assertive and if it involves how women react to a man when he enters a room, well such cannot be turned on or off like a faucet or light switch. Either one is such or not and all the jewelry, gold teeth, money and cars will not alter such.

So don’t trip because I don’t see my self as having swagger, because I don’t give a flying hopper grass. I mean all I see and hear that they got SWAG not only have to tell themselves and everybody else to get themselves noticed, they also seem to have a little sugar in their tanks if you know what I mean. So with that said, they next time somebody profess to have swag, or a woman says that a man has swag – please call him this word – SWAGGOT.

LOL! good one! SWAGGOT! I am truly over the term swag and felt from the time the word was introduced into the urban community it was going to be used in excess and draw away from the true meanings of having the confidence and assertiveness they feel they are speaking of. having confidence is recognizable, it doesn't have to be spoken upon. so the SWAGGOTs out there can be sure that SWAG is not carrying the same meaning as something that can be determined with out words.

A straight man probably shouldn't be the judge of whether or not another straight man has swag.

period dot

somethings just don't cross gender lines, just like women don't always understand why men are attracted to who they are attracted to...men don't always understand women's selections.

SWAG is way over used. When one possesses a certain characteristic, there is no need to let the world know verbally....one's actions and personality will speak for themselves. IF you have "IT" you do and there is no need to constantly make it known to others; just be yourself.

Actually Booberry (yes I am messing with you early in the a.m.)You do have swag.

I was exposed to this term back in the eighties. During the production of a play. I've always taken the term to be one of attitude. But the owner of the attitude does not have to announce that he has it. It is obvious from the moment you connect with the person.

It cannot be purchased in the store. Either you have it or you don't.

Many of the folks who claim that they have got it-don't realize that God will not love them for being a liar!

Just like there is a select group of divas (another over used term: there is also a select group of men who really have swag.

Paul Robeson, MalcolmX, Ossie Davis-they all had it. It is something on the inside that makes the man who he is.

All others are just fkboys with bling on-cause they still working off a consumer mentality!

Ok I get what youy are saying but I think there is a difference between other people saying you have swagger and YOU saying you have swag incessantly.

So I think I could only called self proclaimed Swag having folk Swaggots! *lol*

Plus all Swag is is confidence and self assuredness and if you got it you got it and if you don't you need to go get it.

You cool you wouldn't have to go get it if you cared about such things cause you have it...but you already know that

Funny you brought this up because I was going to blog about something like this. The problem with the word swagger is it has been beat unmercifully into a fine pulp by individuals who are obviously overcompensating for whatever insecurities they possess. It is usually determined by how many women you've had, how much money is in your bank account, and what type of clothes/houses/cars you own. Unfortunately, we all know that the PR department is working overtime to project an image of swagger that really isn't there. What is worse, you have copycats with 4 children and pay no child support, a car where the Blue Book value is less than the rims, and they stay at the crib with Mom; they running around throwing around the word swagger because they got some new Jordans and a Ralph Lauren polo. Dude sit down.

The term or word swagger can be use to admire a man or woman's walk or structural stands...maybe it is humorous because of the way the youth of today uses the term frequently (ha ha ha)...but I have been using the word or term for years to admire the many men I have encountered with different styles of walk and trust me...there are different styles. To me having a swagger to your walk does not identify with confidence...just the way some people walk and not a term of ego, confidence, or wealth. So, if I am contributing to the overuse or overkill of the word or term or being tardy with the saying...so be it...I got my swagger on!!!! :)

I agree that they have worn "swag" into the ground. I guess "swag" is the new term for "steelo"...which wasn't used excessively like swag is. I am quite sick of it myself. You are correct, if you have to keep SAYING it...it's probably not truly there. I believe totally in "Don't talk about it...be about it"....

OK Raw Dawg nice to "see" you again, haven't seen ya in a minute since I shut my personal blog down.
A lot of great points made however, I am going to take task with your melding of the word faggot and swag. I find that problematic for several reasons and makes me feel just a bit itchy. Forgive me and my activist- lets-refrain-from-leveraging-existing-stereotypes and-derogatory-words-nature. I know it is in good fun and a witty play of words but the very play opff the word faggot IMO leverages and validates the use of the word faggot.
