First off, I wasn’t gone touch politics for a while albeit it is the week of the GOP convention and last week I said I would. So I will keep my word. Now don’t get me wrong, I still got NEVER EVER NEVER on deck and INTRO TO MEPHISIAN 102. But folk here has to call it how he see it at this current juncture in time.

So this is for you, the GOP. True I hate on the Democrats too, but this is your day. I guess that all you say is for the social conservatives, which means it aint for me, since I am Memphis Mac. But I hate being played like a step child. You say “hope is a false promise”, but if such is the case, then it tells me you do not have faith or abide by such. Meaning that hope and faith from your point of order is self serving. I also want to add that folk here tired of sound bites, albeit you say that Barack Obama is a sound bite fiend. I agree. But problem is yawl is too – please show me a distinction. You say John McCain is a leader, and that we need a leader like John McCain. My problem is that I don’t follow nobody, let alone a politician, that is supposed to serve me. I figure Jones supposed to follow me. That’s what is wrong with this system in the first place. So don’t get it twisted, I don’t follow nobody folk, I just don’t get down like that abiding by the 14^th amendment as I do.

But it is nice to see McCain go after the black vote; I mean what better way to do such than with a grand momma in her 40’s. So much for abstinence only education and the scary thing is when you see it don’t work, you still prop it up like cold fusion. Not to mention yawl sound like democrats. I mean you complain and say Obama gone have all these programs to spend our loot, but yet you tell me you gone build all these nuclear reactors like it aint cosin' me jack. Where the money coming from, tell me that. Oh my mistake, you don’t even acknowledge deflation as a threat to our economy – and I don’t make 5 million a year folk, seeing that’s your standard of being poor. And don’t be giving jones here no incentive for having health insurance, as much money as I have spent in Iraq, I should have paid for it by now, although I know taking care of Iraqi’s is more important than me in terms of dollars. Fuck them jones, I aint got no problem with them, but I do with them getting more from my tax dollars than I do. Besides, when they or if they come up in this camp me and mine gone handles ours, even on your behalf even though I don’t support you – but that’s how Americans get down.

I won’t touch on Palin, although she does remind me of that Indo-G song “when I die, die, don’t you cry, cry remembers me, Palin, Palin.” So take that had to get it off of my chest, I mean I’m down with country first, but it sound like a disinfectant or air freshener, and I prefer Fabuloso. And true, McCain maybe the most prepared and most experience, but dont forget - most likely to DIE in office. And please no more images of Republicans dancing off beat on CSPAN.

To the honorable Mr. Henry Waxman and Tom Davis:

Why in the fuck are you wasting my tax money to hold Reform Committee hearings of Human Growth Hormone? I mean, it’s nice for me to perceive that you are concerned, but forgive me if I find it hard to fathom that you actually care. I would like to say you both do have top-shelf tie game, but you are no doubt wasting my money.

Honorable Mr. Waxman, forgive me, but I prefer to get my information on science from scientist, of which I consider myself to be, and academic and scientific journals, of which I am certain you don’t read, from the manner in which you stumbled over words and concepts you orated during the segment of CSPAN called Health Effects of Human Growth Hormones.

Of all folks Mr. Waxman, you need to consider HGH given your age, but that is another story. For some reason or another, I feel that the time and money (of which your salary is paid) would be better spent on dealing with education or the issue of the homeless or prison. I mean, more folks are actually affected by the aforementioned than those that inject or consume HGH. Not to mention, your concern for B12 injections appears on the surface to be disingenuous and more prone for a discussion of fans of Roger Clemens.

As I looked at the lot of you listening to the scientific experts, I could not help but feel that they were talking over your heads, and that you all actually felt like sleeping. I say this for you all offered the penumbra that you were the kind of folks who slept through science class. I bet if I gave you a test on what the experts presented, you all would fail (without it being open book, or open note, or a take home).

If I were a gambling man, I would extend the prior assertion to spelling (albeit I can't talk) and or grammar, for I am willing to bet that you do not know what PERNICIOUS means. In either case, I would most likely have to give yawl a make up test to pass.

So Honorable gentleman, please spend my money on important stuff, and don’t even think about giving yourself a raise because you did this shit - conducted a study session on HGH.

B-15 is Pangamic acid and used for folks with high cholesterol, it is also an Ice Berg as well as a form of Military aircraft. I was watching CSPAN when I suspect most folk were looking at the Democratic debates on CNN. I on the other hand was listening to a woman tout how “character counts.” Of a woman who acknowledged that things have occurred under the watch of both democratic and republican presidential administrations. She spoke of her mother in law. Of how she had to be naive and had to be a dreamer, for trying to raise a black male in the 60’s. She admitted her biases, since she confirmed her proud ness to be his wife, his woman. She acknowledged that she would be there for him, that she loved him even if he had nothing, for which she started out with, with him.

She spoke of his beauty and his sacrifice and new that they were blessed, for she saw a person who was willing to give up something for her and others. She said that in her household, “your word is your bond, that you treat people with decency and respect, that nothing was more important than ones commitment to their family and their community.

She said that was why she married him. She said that he was the first African American of the Harvard University Law Review. She said that it was not us, but rather those that keep raising the bar. She said that the only folks that are sacrificing in America now were in Iraq. She said that the rest of us had to shop and that we cant even se our blessings. Yea, folk. She was in Wilmington, Delaware, today and he got him a Coretta. And before I finished this essay, she said. They ask if he is tough enough to deal with the republicans.....she concluded, "look folk, we live in Chicago. 'Cause as she said, "most of us dont know the truth when we see it and most folks aint ready for the truth."

Forgotten Genius

In this time and age where it is difficult to find something to look at on television worthwhile, I was granted a blessing this past week. Outside of ESPN, CSPAN and the occasional show on HGTV, it is not easy to find material that makes one want to sit down and view it in its completeness with their family. This past week, the Public Broadcasting Service series NOVA aired the life story of one of the most remarkable scientist of the 20th century, Percy Julian.

As a child, I grew up idolizing Dr. Julian because I was always interested in chemical and chemistry and blowing up stuff, but never knew of any other chemist other than him growing up in Memphis. Born the grandson of slaves in Alabama, he attended DePauw University in Indiana. Just to pay for his education he worked as a waiter and even a ditch digger. He received his A.B. in 1920, graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was the valedictorian of his class. It was his goal to become only the second African American with a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the time. However, even with good grades, no school would offer him entry in such a program. Even the people who wrote letters of recommendation for him explaining his brilliance asked the universities of his selection to discourage him from getting a Ph.D.

Eventually, he went to Fisk University as an instructor in chemistry and eventually to Harvard as an Austin fellow. He received his Masters at Harvard, but was unable to seek his Ph.D. Julian had to travel to Europe where he finally received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Vienna in 1931.

Although he loved academic science, it was difficult, because of minor scandals and racism, for Dr. Julian to work in Academia. However, he was able to secure a job with the Glidden Company as the Director of Research and Development – this was some decade before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. Julian’s accomplishments are many folds: he synthesized a soy sterol to manufacture male and female hormones, progesterone and testosterone. Julian also synthesized the medicines physostigmine for glaucoma and cortisone for rheumatoid arthritis. He held more than 100 patents.

The show was aptly called "Forgotten Genius”. I was just happy to be able to see such greatness, such stamina and such perseverance at a time when children are up and feeling blessed that I was able to share this moment with my son and daughter. Good Look Nova that was the bomb show.
