21 stitches

These little boys now days are getting out of hand. I don’t know what the deal is, albeit I do have some idea, but it appears as if we are losing our community to estranged forces that come from both within and outside. I heard on the radio today that a young teenager was jumped on a Marta train by a group of other boys, to the extent that he required 21 stitches in his mouth and treatment for other bumps, bruises and lacerations. When I was growing up, this may have happened but more than likely one or two or several men would have intervened and smacked the shit of the fools. But where are we now? Why or better yet, where are the men, like the ones I learned from, like myself located? They or we seem to be invisible.

I often use the phrase female but it is only in reference to a gender specifically. I mean it is possible for a person to be a female but not a woman. For example, to me being a woman regards a specific statement of character that presupposes future possibilities inclusive of being a wife and a mother, whereas female makes reference to “relating to, or being the sex that bears young or produces eggs.” Just as such, I can make the same example regarding men, whereas a male is “an individual that produces small usually motile gametes (as spermatozoa or spermatozoids) which fertilize the eggs of a female.”

I say this to assert that is possible to be a female without being a woman and it is possible to be a male without being a man. This means that any real woman would see the importance of the man in the household, especially as it pertains to raising sons, little boys or what ever one would call them. Any woman that would not appreciate the qualities of such a person would not be a woman. By the same token, any one can be a male, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a man. I know I sound some what confusing as does most formal logic, but it is essential I communicate to those males that don’t understand that a man displays high degrees of “the qualities considered distinctive of manhood - the quality or state of being manly.”

As such, we need to reclaim our neighborhoods and step up to the plate. I just wonder where the men on that Marta train were. For a man would have broken up the savagery that resulted in that child – yes child, having to require 21 stitches. If we don’t, then we will be raising a coterie of males and not men – people who think that what kind of car they drive and how many pair of tennis shoes they can purchase defines them. We will continue to produce a group of unproductive persons who feel that trapping is the best way to make money because they do not have the fortitude to work a nine to five, and pay bills, and taxes, and provide their kids and family with lunch money or whatever else they need.

You women, I admit, yawl trying your best but no matter what u do you can not teach a boy to be a man or what it will be like to be a man. Maybe you can teach him to be a gentleman, but that’s all. We need to do something about these messages that suggest what one has is more important than issues of character. We need to stand up and do whatever as men; we can to fight messages that support the notion of our women being merely hoes and bitches. If we don’t we will continue to look out our windows, and ignore something that we can easily fix ourselves. If we don’t we will not be worthy of any woman, for a woman will not follow a man she does not believe or have any faith in, and I’d hope she would not be with a male that neglects the responsibility of raising his son, or other little boys if he has too.

Hear! Hear! I agree wholeheartedly with you on this subject....this kind of thing on MARTA has happened more than once, and just a few other incidents where it was questioned where were the men???? Who will stand up??? Most seem to be afraid of these younguns...and to be honest who wouldn't be...these are not the younguns of my day...these are in fact young-guns....hotheaded, disrepectful among other things, who don't want to listen and don't usually have to listen to anyone because they don't have anyone in their life to challenge, teach, enlighten or encourage them....are they not similar to the boys in the Lord of Flies...raising themselves, coming up with their own rules, etc....WE need our men, in the community, church, schools, stores, MARTA, to step up! YES! we do, and ain't gonna lie to you, some may be hurt or have to die for the cause, but if we all cower, hide behind our cd players, and books, turn away, one of these days it could be us they are beating on and not some young kid. I am happy to say that i know of one man who is intent on raising the game, and raising males to men and you can check him out on my blog. Good post! Relative post!

CHUUUUUCHHHHHHHH!!! another reason why IM scared to bring children into this already messed up world. Things done changed. You are right, a boy needs a strong, male presence in his life even if it aint his daddy. I see alot of women bringing their kids around anybody and everybody and they look to videos for their role models. But at the same time, WOMEN need to teach their daughters how to be LADIES too.

Where were these men? Perhaps they were more driven by the instinct of self-preservation than the instinct of protection. After all, every other animal may risk his neck to protect his own, but rarely will they go to that extent to protect another's. Why should man be so different? Every one of us reacts instinctively to many of the situations we face. Some fight, some fly. It's not a thought process. It's a reaction that completely bypasses thought, and it's designed to do so for our own good. How can we label one instinctive reaction right and another wrong?

EVA-J: well i beg to differ, instincts are contigicies of survial versus what i was speaking about, which was a habit, a contigenicy of reinforcement. We dont have to learn instincts but the do learn habites -i.e. that it is more imoirtant to just be a male rather than a man

Funny. We I rode Marta and had my first experience of the "after school rush" I reminded being surprised that the young men would part ways when I walked thru, as to not "shoulder bump."

In NYC. Big Difference, you bumping shoulder with everyone.
No one is yeilding, which is why I saw, MANY train beat down.

I think these young boys... assimulate; and when you assimulate peer pressure can be a BIG endorser.

Yeah, well, i think MARTA riders started off trying to be cordial, etc...but thats over...we bumping too, and you are right, when someone bumps you..your first reaction is to bump back...when the doors open, everybody rushes the door...if u ain't there you may either be stuck on the train, or never get on...in the end when noone is being courteous, its the courteous that gets run over...i've learned that lesson the hard way...missed a few stops myself...u see i was tryin to be a lady, but when it comes to mounting that train....i'm no lady, no more..i bump, knock, kick, move, push and give back everything i'm given...the only ones i don't push around and will take some abuse for our the elderly and pregnant, everybody else is free game...and as for the those loud-mouthed, rude kids, didn't nobody raise them!!!! Thats the problem, at least i know no child i raise would ever be so rude, nasty and downright ignorant...i know we always talking about back in the day...we couldn't get away with SHT! bc there was always somebody who knew somebody who knew you mama and daddy, and would tell and your mama and daddy would care enuf that they didn't mind you taking an azz whoopin from some total stranger and would perform the duty themselves when you return home...this is part of what is missing in todays society...and i'm gonna tell you the truth...there are some days i can take that mess, some days i can ignore, press my head in a book, turn the other way when they are acting a fool, as long as they not acting one with me, but then again...there are those days when i can't take that SHT! and I have been known to say it, loud...now grant it, they think i'm crazy, but they shut the hell up too! BTW...the fight thing, i saw the same thing happen with a bunch of girls jumping on one girl across the train tracks, several men stood by and looked, several black men laughed and pointed, one white man broke it up...shame!

I did a similar post last month, although mine was more of a tribute to the real woman out there.

You make several valid points, BUT, this problem here is on the surface. To solve THIS problem, you have to get down to the root of it. There aren't too many real men (or women for that matter) because nowadays kids are having kids. Boys don't really have anyone to look up to because either their father is either in jail, dead, or just left because he wasn't ready to be a father. Woman are forced to play both mother and father. Granted, a woman can never teach a boy the same things a man can, but you have to applaud them for trying.

What happened down there was very unfortunate, but if these kids had something productive to do after school it might not have happened. Then again, thanks to the government, all these after school programs are being chopped out of the budget leaving kids with nothing to do and nowhere to go afterschool.

As much as I agree with you in regards to reclaiming our neighborhoods, it is much easier said than done. People are so independent of one another that you can't even get a block association or neighborhood watch program together. And don't let me get started on day care centers because that's another topic for another day.
