strong black woman

First, I am not a woman nor am I a black woman, let alone a strong black woman. For me, I have see the later my entire life. The type of women who would go and pull their man by his ears from a crap game and drag him to church. The kind that would hold down two or more jobs as well as be a homemaker to her family and kids. The kind that won’t take no shit from anyone and who still had enough time to make certain her family and kids had food on their plate. The kind that would be cursing out her son (me) but at the same time putting food on my plate.

But I have just come to findout that this White female by the name of Kathy Griffin is holding a television comedy show called STRONG BLACK WOMAN. The show is being released and shown on the Bravo television station.

The show, which is supposed to air on May 9 2006, was produced by Emmy-winning Production Partners Inc who also produced HBO's "Chris Rock: Bigger & Blacker" and "Curb your Enthusiasm."

I may be making too much about this but I was extremely offended when I saw her and the title. Our women have it hard enough for another person from a alternate species to make money off of what they are not. I say we take the time to drop an email at the Bravo channel, which is part of the NBC Universal Cable Entertainment division, an email and let the know what we think. My rant is over for now.

i really don't see the logic of her associating that title with her show.......jus seeking attention in the wrong way and its stupid

I agree with you. I generally do not comment before viewing or reading the piece in question, but we have to work way too hard to get the little respect that we get as Black women. If we made a comedy show entitled the "Strong White Woman" it would be off the air before most of us had a chance to see it!

Melissa-
HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!!!
I am so tired of other races capitalizing at our expense. If it's not sexism we're fighting, then it's racism. It's not easy living in a society that loathes both minority groups (black and female). For the "Strong Black Women" I know, it's not a choice but a necessity. It's a slap in the face for this woman to entitle her show Strong Black Woman...once again being a black woman is seen as a joke. I was wondering what her logic was behind the name: ratings?, attention?, bonified stupidity? or she just doesn't give a damn. -Melissa

Dang, she's a comedian people! Seems like a big joke to me. Are racially charged jokes ok as long as they're not aimed at black women? Her special has yet to air, we have no clue exactly what response she is intending to elicit through her reference to herself as a "Strong Black Woman." Maybe it will be a completely inappropriate jab at all us black queens, maybe it will be a show of respect. We just don't know. Now I'm the first to question white women aspiring to be black, but I just can't be offended until I know what she means. I'll let you know after I see the special.

LOL @ aquababie "Strong White Woman" isn't that an oxymoron?

Anyway, I saw the preview and I watched the hour of standup comedy by Kathy Griffin. I think that was the point ... to widen her audience and get people to watch. She said during the show that she named the special "Strong Black Woman" because it made no sense. That's the kind of comedy she does. As a Black woman I wasn't offended by it.

She said in the NYTimes that the show "... bears this title for no reason at all. She is as interested in race as she is in Greenpeace or North Korea... " Need to give her the pimp salute - back hands up - position - smack that trick in the mouf

The last time I heard that wench make a comment about the strong black woman, there was nothing comical about it, nor did it seem to be in jest. She has some beef with Oprah and was all over the topic like she knew what the hell she was speaking on... don't get me started!

Interesting that she claimed to be as uniterested in race as she is in Greenpeace or North Korea. If that truly was the case, why title your show in the first place? Why not just use your name? Oh, she cares alright. Cares enough to know that clarification of any "unintentional oversights" are usually enough to quiet the roar of a crowd. I mean, she is a comedian, right? Don't act like she just started performing two hours ago...

Why are ya'll all up in arms about a show that you don't even know what's about. Shut up! Furthermore, if you want to bitch about something bitch about hip-hop, the way that our own BLACK PEOPLE capitalize on the exploitation of black males and females. I am please, compared to the songs that are out there this sitcom will be nothing. It may even be positive in the sense that it won't have us on TV ass-out, looking scanky and slutty. You want get upset about something be upset about the music that your neices, nephews, sons and daughters listen to. I guarantee it's worse that this show!
