poor mr. or mrs. next president

It was my intention to not discuss the caucus results of Iowa and or Barack Obama at all so early in the election. I was hoping after reading a substantial corpus of blogs from around the globe I would see a majority of the implications discussed. Especially after such a "stunning" victory (others words not mine; stunning to me is 50% of the votes).

For the record, your boy here likes to stack a little change. Easy change which means using your brain. Maybe some consulting or statistical data analysis mostly, but also in them markets, precious metals and Forex exchanges. I mean I bought my first stocks when the DOW was at 3500 (which fell today 266.84 to 12,998.28). So one could suffice to say I have accrued and nice sum of chump change.

However, I feel that whoever the next President is, there will be something to deal with that won't be easily dealt with either with the rhetoric of experience or new leadership. This week, an ominous and unfortunate event occurred, the price of oil went over the mythical $100.00 a barrel mark. Although it returned below that level, it did happen.

True, the price is a function of increasing demand, especially from countries in Asia like china and India, but it is also a major consequence of the falling dollar. It is also a function of disruptions abroad due to civil unrest and war. Not to mention, that in America, there is no productivity in manufacturing, we make nothing anymore, no job creation and as noted in 2007, a 40% increase in consumers filing of bankruptcies. The latter itself is the function of another indicator - the increase in foreclosures and the decline of the housing market.

Now I'm no economist, but I think I was taught well by my 10th grade Econ teacher at Hamilton High School in Memphis, Dr, Moyer, but I can say that when Bush came in, we had a surplus and now, by the next 120 day, who knows, maybe inflation. And the Federal Reserve may not be able to do nothing about it. I mean as long as I have been investing, in particular in forex and precious metals, the dollar normally increased proportionally to the price of Gold. Now the dollar goes down as gold (and oil) increases. This scares the fuck out of me and the 300K plus I have saved over the years.

So yep, Obama won Iowa. I do wish him the best albeit I am supporting neither democratic or the republican nominee. Nonetheless, still more states and regardless of whoever wins, I feel sorry for poor Mr. or Mrs. President, whoever they maybe.

[PS: ANY YAWL SEE HOW ROMNEY STOLE THE MESSGE OF CHANGE FROM YO FOLK OBAMA-LOL. THEY STOLE ROCK NOW THIS.]

I'm glad you decided to do this post, Mr. Dawg. It was very well written and insightful. I agree, it is gonna be a hard road to tow, for whoever takes the Presidency, with the challenge of oil prices and the war we are fighting, but they know what the road ahead has to offer and they are willing to face it head on, As far as the overwhelming win fall for Obama. I think they say that because he is a black man in a white state (numbers not withstanding). Peace my brother and Happy New Year.

One Man - I agree, its stunning to have a black man win the superbowl as a quarterback. u right anything we do stunns them except for crime. thanks 4 the blessings

Down here, they all over the radio station saying that since he won Iowa, thats a reason to vote. I was taken by this because it was like telling black folks vote for the black man or worse vote for the democrat. I think he is the best canidate - thats what they should have said. vote for the best canidate. we are not sheep. we can think. Excellent post. Because most of us don't know the economic situation today, let alone when or if he or the next president elect tales office.

I don't think that it will be smoothe sailing for Obama for the the next few months. Both Hilary and Edwards will fight like the she cats they both are and attack him mercilessly. But if you are into horse racing, this might be the most interesting one we've had in years.

all of the Talking Heads were stunned...
they really thought it was going to be Mitt and Hill...

It was some kind of Night...Amazing...
( I think Michelle is much more eloquent than Hillary....and she connects....I do like Elizabeth Edwards too..)...

And Obama's Speech and Edwards Speech- NOW both of those Speechs really did sound Presidential....wow...finally.

Bottom line, I agree with the fact that whomever becomes the next president of this country has their work cut out for them. GB has so screwed up this country inside and out, at home and abroad from sea to shining sea, that the next president will be at work night and day just to straighten things out. Damn making any improvements.

enigma4ever said...

But the next president will have to have people willing to help and work to clean up the Mess that Bushco has left everywhere....it is amazing how many things this incompetent idiot thug has broken in our country....
from education to Iraq to VET care to healthcare to Economy to ????? you name it , he broke it....

Hillary can take her abestos pantsuits and go back to NY as far as I am concerned....( she has not done squat as a Senator....)

thank you for what you said about the Wives...

I was just talking to my father about this money situation 2 weeks ago. The dollar is ridiculous. You can't even travel in Europe anymore. Who wants to pay 2xs as much for everything? Not me. WACK. I want to know how to reverse it. How is it that the dollar is becoming a peso or real?? FIX IT!! (never understood econ. i understand math, logic, english, history. econ is how you get jameil to glaze.)

I am viewing this race from afar but with interest. Don't you think a Dem ticket of Obama/Edwards and a Rep ticket of McCain/Guiliani would be a fair offering of choice for the voters?

mp1 said...

memphiz, I think that's a legitmiate worry. I'm worried about that myself.

T, you're so right about this economy. It's in the shitter. Whoever does win this election is going to have to address a boatload of issues. It's going to be impossible for them to restore the prosperity that was here in the 90's. It's going to take a number of regimes to get that straightened out.

Jaded said...

I've been blogging about how the US Government is the biggest business on the planet for a few years now. I don't believe the current system is at all how our "founding fathers" intended things to work. This 2 party system makes it impossible for some highly qualified candidates to even make it to the ballot, let alone have a chance to be elected. This is why I call it the lesser of all evils...it's all bad, and we have to decided who is less horrific than the other. As long as those in power have the means of capitalizing financially on their positions, nothing will change for the rest of us. Our country suffers, yet they get richer. Doesn't make any sense to me.

I like Obama. I think he's someone who just really wants to do what's right and help people. I don't think he's been around long enough to be tainted by the status quo. I have to disagree with you at least to some degree about the "us vs. them" thing. When you say "anything we do stuns them except for crime" that kind of confuses me. I think they considered it a stunning victory because Clinton was expected to win that race based on straw polls and she ended up in 3rd place. At one point, they though Edwards would beat her, she'd come in 2nd and Obama a disant 3rd. Neither of those scenarios played out.

As I said, I like Obama. I like what he has to say, I like his vision, I like his warmth and the fact that he seems real and connected to regular people. It never occured to me that I was also supposed to consider his race. A good man is a good man, period. Well, that's what I think anyway.

I mean we know McDonalds after buying? I'd be mad as a MF if I asked for a big mac and thy give me some bun and some special sauce. We learn when we spend and participate

Caoimhin - can see 3, but you stilll have to tell and sale me o the "truithnes" of Jones from New York

Jaded _ I agree, I LIKE him to nd he is throwback (an artist Philospher). But I am a Libertarian, and in the end if best reflect thoes views then he straight, thats all I sk. Thinking politics with action - don tred on me man

Thanks for this. This was very insightful and salient post. I have my concerns about the presidential race. I like Obama and his connection to the people, but I'm not sure if America is ready for a black, brown, or beige president. Some of America can easily forget it until they look at his wife, who is a darker shade of brown. I'm not politically astute, but I am afraid that the Democratic vote will be split and America will have to endure another eight years of the status quo. Can anyone break that down for me?

Jaded said...

I am registered as an Independent. I used to be Republican, but I "formally disaffiliated" myself from any party, because I don't like the way things are run.

We had a Libertarian candidate for governor a while back here in NJ. I campaigned for him, and voted for him. He lost the election to the republican, Christie Whitman, although he did get a lot of votes. Ultimately, in an effort to become a more "legitimate" politician, he became a Republican, and now I can no longer support anything he does.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I don't always blog about controversial stuff...often it's just the day to day stuff that is my life. I throw in the other stuff as I get annoyed.

Yes, the challenges are great. But, wars can be ended. Handouts can be terminated. Freedom can be restored -- or at least made a more valued asset.

Ron PAUL can win.

Otherwise, the downward spiral of American will quicken.

No matter who wins this next election~they are going to spend their first year cleaning up the Bush Admin's mess. And that is a major ecology job in my mind. It is full of toxic waste from the lack of leadership and intelligence.

I disagree with those who are fearful for Obama's life as a reason not to support his politics~(if they are acceptable.) I have no doubt that Barack and Michelle have thought about and discussed the possibility of this happening. What person of color wouldn't think of that as a realistic possibility? I am sure George has thought about it during his time in office.
In reality~any body can be killed in this nation at any given moment for a variety of reasons. Do you really feel safe in America?

This post has validity. The market and economy is in a state of emergency. We cannot ignore the fact that a recession is possible.

One of the things that I like about Obama's politics is the fact that he also challenges us to be a part of the solution.

That says to me that I have to be actively responsible in my community for what goes on. And do some needed work in the place where I live. To become involved and to make a commitment to do something other than sit.

All-Mi-T [Thought Crime] Rawdawgbuffalo said...

Totally off-topic, Torrance, but you just KNOW this Chargers gal has to come see what you think about tomorrow's game. ;) Our last meeting with your boys was a 'down-in-the-dirt' mess; one which we barely squeaked out. Soooo, what about this one?

Mes Deux Cents said...

Hi Torrance,

As for the general election; I would just remind everyone of the tactics used in the Tennessee Senate race.

The attacks on Harold Ford Jr. will be the same attacks on Sen. Obama.

I may be a cynic but I just don't believe that America, in all her racist glory, will elect a Black person President.

Republicans are smart at this game, that's why they keep winning. Romney know his party don't care about the working class, but he'll make them think he does.

Direction is lost in this country and four years is not nearly enough to make a dent. Although it only took Bush two years to set us back in time ten. Why is it so easy to mess thing up and so hard to clean it back up?

Carole McDonnell said...

Ah, Torrance! A man after my own heart. I'm not too keen on any major party candidate.

Thanks for stopping by my blog RawDawg. Ang congrats on your investments.

The only good thing about a low dollar is that is should stimulate US exports, and since the US trade deficit is rediculously high thisis a good thing. That trade imbalance is not good for the global economy.

I agree that the next president whoever (s)he turns out to be will have a number of huge economic obstacles to overcome. Your post lays out a few of them.

Prez Bush has been unable to bring talent to his administration to effectively deal with problems. Hopefully, the next president will recognize that you need *talent* at the table ... regardless of political party, gender or race ... to deal with these problems.

Hi Torrance,

Great post.

Like Jaded, I'm getting to a point where I'm so annoyed that I have to comment--I normally don't post this type of stuff in my own blog and am fighting to keep it out for sanity's sake (and because this is just not what my blog is about), but sigh! Thanks for the venue to vent/discuss.

BTW, I've heard "predictions" that gold will go over $1K per Troy ounce. As I write this, it's at $906... Again, sigh!

I'm so frustrated nowadays because between politics and the media's unchecked penchant to spin and hype, nobody's being held accountable for anything--hence, the deeper and deeper we delve into this mess that is America (and that's not even getting into how we affect the rest of the world).

I'm really pissed about not having much of a choice on being taken along for the ride.

For one thing, I don't understand why Bush wasn't impeached a long time ago (well, with regard to politics, sure I understand). And on the other hand, the alternative replacement(s) wouldn't have been too appealing either.

I have no clue who I'm voting for (except to say that it will not be Huckabee or McCain under any circumstances--Clinton is headed towards that category too...)

Ah, to clean up this mess--that's a tall order for the next Pres. Gawd I'm so frustrated about all of this.
