How hard is for you during these really bad economic times?

It's the same for me, just harder to make that EXTRA dollar since we do real estate investing. I've had to go into the "renting" business for a while, which I never really wanted to do.

Nevertheless, I've come to find that it's times like these that force you to turn inward and pull out another jewel that God had resting on the inside of you.

Dig up those jewels son!

Proverbs 13:23 - In the fallow ground of the poor is MUCH food.

How ironic...I was just having this conversation with one of my co-workers a week or so ago..I asked him if he and his family were feeling the effects of this "recession" since he has a wife and 2 little girls...

I honestly don't feel it in the pockets that much because I rent an apartment (don't own a home), i'm single, no kids, and well I work 2 jobs. I think the only time I ever really "notice" is at the gas pump. I notice a few things here and there like cost of some groceries. Big picture however, relatively speaking I'm alright.

omi said...

similar to jillian, except i'm trying to get some debt under control and need a 2nd job/side hustle, but don't know how to fit it in when i already have a 90min-2hr commute. trying to brainstorm that now.

Lina said...

I have to agree with Jillian. I don't see it except in little places (gas station, grocery store) but I started making changes in my life to prepare me for times like this a little while ago, so I think its gonna be okay.

My life has not changed because I have never been a materialistic person so my spending habits are not ridiculous. I live beneath my means and think about my kids' futures. I am tired of people blaming the economy for their screwed up life. I pray that my financial situation will grow over time. I could have a million dollars but would hope I would be the same person :) Have a great weekend.

I am feeling all of you all...i am definitely understanding where Rich is basically trying to figure out what the next move should be...take the gov't job that offers security but no real creativity, or take the risk and stay where i am at and really build a creative program take the road less traveled...

i can definitely dig the ladies, being single, no kids and its just me...its a lot easier i just got a promotion so my money AS funny as its been but i am definitely cutting back, getting ride of debt and saving saving saving as much as i can...

i think more so than recession its just dealing with adult life and the "real world" is the issue

I was brought up in a "cost conservative" environment & we were taught how to make do no matter what the situation was. I've been blessed to have no major issues that has disrupted my lifestyle, but you know I'm very low-key.

Posting anon because it's frankly nobody's business but posting nonetheless because folks need to know there are a of people out here being hit damn hard - especially children!

When the downturn first started really around the holidays of '07, my brother lost his job of 7 years. He felt optimistic because he had labor skills and had always worked (30+ years). Six months later, moving to a new state, still no work. Six months after that, back to school for retraining and now heavily indebted for it, still nothing. He and his wife spent January and part of February living in a car in a Kmart parking lot. Unemployment is running out again, and still nothing. He's now given up looking for 'paying' work and is just searching for work that helps him out and whomever he works for (barter).

My own immediate family has kinda special circumstances, but we were living out of tent for almost two months last summer and moved to another state. I have become a sort of advocate for the homeless & dislocated in my area. I fed and housed several houseless children this winter and became much more involved in the community.

A lot of us closer to the bottom have already lost everything, especially the types of jobs we've always fed our families with. Mostly that means giving up of dreams, goals and plans in order to deal with the immediate needs (Maslow's heirarchy). Since September, it's meant tossing out the belief in how things used to work and making our own ways of getting by.

Believe it or not...

I'm actually maintaining my first year out of my parents house without any problems. It wasn't as prosperous as last year but I can buy groceries and maintain the lifestyle I live without going bankrupt.

OT is trippin but hey, I'm finding I can live just fine without it.

It's not really fucking with me yet, but it's fucking with people around me in a major way. I know dudes that had to stop selling Kush and drop down to a much lower grade weed to keep they customers.

Then tha coldest blow is a few Teacher broads I know is getting laid off after getting Masters Degree's in Education. Now when I say laid off, I mean off, and getting a job at Starbucks is hard.

My family is doing okay. However, we have stopped eating out as much and other recreational activities.

So I notice because there is not a lot of "extra" money to throw around. I so miss sushi out with the husband, we use to do it all the time, now, I can count on one hand how many times we gone in the last couple of months.

Had to put theme priorities first, like food and mortgage.

Personally, I haven't felt a recession crunch. But even though I'm a northern girl, I come from a family of southerners who grew up during Jim Crow (my mama picked cotten as a teen, daddy grew up in a little racist town in Texas). What I learned from them is how to make do. I think most black folks already know this, so a recession won't affect most of us too harshly.

Life experience, though, has taught me that no matter what, God is always in control. I'm not a religious person, but I do know that their is a higher source that is truly in control. Everything we have (material possessions, spouse, kids, career) is all borrowed. We don't own any of it. The Creator just lets us use/have these things. But when the Creator decides, He/She will take it all away, and we'll return to that source for our nourishment, our being.

So I don't worry about a recession. I'm even getting ready to launch my own company in the face of this recession. If it works out, WONDERFUL! If not, well such is life. I'll keep on living even if I have to move in with friends. We'll just pool our resources, like the Asians do! LOL!

I'll find someone who can plant good crops and we'll live off the earth and make beautiful babies. Whatever happens, no American or even global recession will determine my fate. God and I will!

Nothing has changed for me...never been the one to go out spending without having the cash in hand...everything I have is paid in full except my home and thankfully my home value hasn't dipped below my OG purchase price...I actually feel like I have more $$ now, since the price of gas has gone down...

So far so good. I've had to make some cutbacks due to the current economic state. Child support is sketchy since "he" works in the automotive industry. Haven't had a raise in 3 years which means my dollar isn't going as far as it used to.

Like another poster, I just cut back on my entertainment expenses. Not going out to dinner, not going to the regular show (we go to the $1 show), not shopping for things I don't need.

If I lost my job then things would go downhill quickly. But my mom lives in a house by herself.. We can always move in with her if we had to!

It's had a pretty big impact on me. AS a Chef working in the hospitality industry it's rough. I work out of a hotel and our bread and butter is banquets from big corporations. Right now they can't afford it which means less hours for me and less money in my pockets. I'm going through my savings just to keep my head above water. I have faith it will get better just hopefully sooner than later.

KELSO'S NUTS said...

No change whatsoever. I have work no matter what the economy is. In January of 2007, the combination of what I had heard from an ex-girlfriend who was a mortgage broker combined with the shit-canning of Rumsfeld who had presented a plan to end both wars, win lose or draw at the beginning of 2009 and have every person home, screw the Iraq embassy, plus the steepening of the oil curve, I dumped all my US dollar equities and kept the cash in the bank here.

I generally get in business with people who think like I do, anticipating events, so when the American tourist business dried up over the Christmas-New Year's holidays, our C.O.O recommended selling half the club here for a free-roll on the other half, just to be safe and have some cash back. He made a great call.

On the other hand 30% of the people I know well in the states who are not self-employed have lost their jobs, including my brother-in-law. Somebody I know who works for himself lost his whole business. That's hideous.

I don't know whom to blame exactly. I know that it seems like Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich have been warning about this from early 2005 on. Even Hillary Clinton was making the resolution of the CDOs part of her campaign spiel as early as February 2008.

Most of the people I know from the Web feel as I do about the combination of the economic disaster and the expropriation of 200,000,000 peoples money upward to 1000 people. George W. Bush's plan seem to work perfectly for him. As for Obama, a good friend who's a political analyst for the AFSCME public employees union said "Obama? Smart guy but he was always Wall Street's candidate. You never thought this was going to out of work miners, did you?"

mom keeps being cancelled at her second job at the hospital. dad doesn't work due to illness. mom's taking care of 7 ppl. mortgage to pay. just got the house in 07. her tax person screwed up her taxes from like 2 years ago. IRS charged her 20,000 for it. 2 kids in college, another one at home with big appetite. no end in sight.

looking to God for help. i'm doing my part by working two jobs and never asking her for money. might throw mom the extra cash left over from financial aid this year. we'll see.

as for me, i have no idea if i'll get a job once i'm done with all this schooling. grad school in the back seat because there's no money to pay for it.

I've done what I needed to in terms of making economic adjustments. Since this is not the first economic recession that I have lived through, I do have the blessing of a refrence point.

The biggest change I have made is in purchasing meals during the work week. I pack my lunch practically everyday. My initial investment in purchasing the food works out quite nicely in my overall budget. I also do not purchase coffee or beverages. I don't like to take my personal water bottles to work. But, I have done so just to save funds and the planet.

I am able to feed my cravings for books, music and movies through my networks. So I am good for the moment. I walk to and from work, unless the weather is bad. So I am getting the physical and mental benefits from that.

I think I paid my dues a few years ago when I went through some financial issues that were my own doing. All is well on my end, although I feel for folks who aren't because it's harder to get ahead when there are so many in the same boat. I agree with Rich, it's time to look inward and really acknowledge what God has, can and will do whether in good times or bad.

I know folks who are being hit hard and I know folks who barely realize we are in a recession! I am in the middle. My family and I are living OK, we have seen better times but we have seen much worse so I can't really complain. We don't eat out as much. But we do work in a family outing at least twice a month.
Our family is doing what we always have done...if one person is in need then we all pull together to help out. Nothing new or different there!
So like I said, I can't really complain, We Do What We Do!

honestly, i can't tell if it's the recession or just my irresponsible spending habits... i'd like to blame the recession but yea... probably not.

also, i was recently approved for a car loan. the process was quick and easy. apparently navy federal bank is doing ok... i'll be interested to see how my application for school loans will go and if ill get as much in grants as i have been getting so far in my college career.

Can't say that I feel it in the pocket, but there is a constant fear of job loss. Job keeps cutting and cutting. Now they have brought in a consulting firm to "improve" operations...which means...learn to do more with less...which means cutting jobs. Sucks.

I hear what a lot of others have been saying as well...as far as noticing it with people around them...not so much themselves..

Ironically..as I was reading others comments...it hit me about my job situation that brought me to Texas...I lost my job in 2007...I guess I don't really think of it too harshly bc I worked for a great company that gave me a very generous severance package..

In any case, times are tough but like anything in life..life is what you make it..

I haven't forgot about your books :)...I hope you come over to my other blog one of these days :)

I haven't felt the pinch too much. I've seen what other people have to deal with now because of it, and therefore I'm being more careful with my money. I have been looking for a 2nd job to get rid of my debt, and I haven't had much luck though.
