An Hour Away

Being so caught up on loot and the current economic crisis I am often forgetful of the importance of being informed on a worldly stage. But I was just reminded of this. I mean I was asked to write an essay by this news weekly in Atlanta on Obama and his trip to the Summit of the Americas this past week, so I did. Sure I burst open a few GOP perspectives and nonsensical projections, but overall, I was only reminded that Mr. President has big problems and needs to step his game up.

We still have major problems in Afghanistan and especially its neighbor Pakistan. It seems that The Taliban is advancing more and more each day. Not only in the ability to run the courts in feudal courts in both of the nation states above, but all so in their ability to influence the local inhabitants and occupy more territory. They are all over the Swat Valley in Pakistan and looking as if they are becoming entrenched in the area northwest of the capital

How much are they in control? Well let us just say they are patrolling the roads military style and broadcasting messages on loud speakers throughout the area. Which tell me that the so called peace effort offered by the new government has no weight and will likely fail? And this is just a week after the Pakistan's president signed off on the peace pact. The Swat Valley has seen some of the heaviest fighting between the Taliban and security forces over the past year. But it also seems that the new government’s agreement to impose Islamic law in Malakand in an effort to end the fighting with the Taliban may back fire. It is hard to know what is true and fact however, they do this in Pakistan but in Afghanistan, the Taliban denied they were holding peace talks with the government and continue to be able to conduct “high-profile attacks” even as US troop strength continue to grow.

I know Obama understand that Pakistan is a major problem with what we confront in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, he may get his wish and have troops up in that camp before we can say another US bank has failed. For the Taliban is now in control of another district in the country's northwest just 70 miles from the capital. They have also banned music and television and stopped women from entering into a popular shrine of a Muslim saint.
The Taliban has placed the ball in our court now and I wonder what the President will do or plans to do for I have not heard in detailed plans to deal with Pakistan in concert with the Taliban. I just hope he don’t wait until the last minute like Bush 43 or until the government is over thrown and the Taliban running thangs up in that camp. They way I see it, now the Taliban is only an hour away from the capital, and if history is correct, they aint got no problem with taking over and ousting a sitting government.

You're right. Obama needs to step his game up. There are no easy decisions to be made in his position. I'm sure he'll pull one of many committees together to come up with a solution. His last resort would be sending more troops over there. I'm wondering if that is the best option though considering his expressed thoughts in the past regarding the usage of troops.

Your assessment is correct...The Taliban has been regrouping for years. This entire problem could have been resolved if the U.S. hadn't been side tracked into Iraq.
looking for invisible weapons. If Obama and the Pakistani and Afghan
governments don't step up their games soon...The Taliban is going to walk right into the capital. They
could do it right now..and why they haven't is only because of the fear and respect they still have for the US Military..Fear that may soon be waning.

"An Hour Away" from the dawning of a new day and we know that is always darkest just before dawn.

I don't get the overwhelming sense that this administration will execute a sensible foreign policy agenda. Yet there's a shimmer of promise considering he's read Fareed Zakaria’s “The Post-American World" too.

I love that you keep important issues spotlighted. Get 'em babe!

Best thing we can do is get the fuck out of their countries.

Our Empire is dying, but we are going to take down a lot of innocent people with us as we go.

It is not our duty to save any of those countries from any fate (which is the lie the American people believe). The Taliban is there as much because the people WANT them there as any other reason. Our presence just exasperates the issue.

And meanwhile the situations in Kashmir and Bangladesh worsen and Sri Lanka is on the verge of full civil war. Is Obama still sure that South Asian indefinite escalation is a real super great idea?

It's bugging me so much, I'm becoming sort of a Redneck on this. Well, a Buelahman-Style Redneck, anyway.

In 1981, with a war going on in Lebanon, I registered for the US draft with the SSS. At the very worst, I'd have a two-year deferrment in hand and it just seemed grotesque not to register when so many might have to go fight in Lebanon immediately whereas I'd be able to buy myself a little time. Although I was a pacifist then as I am now, I felt morally obligated to register for that reason. I would have gone if called had Reagan not gotten the US out after the bombing. Not happily, of course, but who was happy about it?

While a lot of these picayune issues the Republican Party raises about Obama range from boring to nauseating, the issue of whether or not he registered in 1981 like I did was never resolved to my satisfaction.

I did my FOIA about 15 years ago and my SSS papers were there. Why were Obama's missing? Why did a copy dated 1993 of all bizarre things show up soon after?

Rhetorical questions, of course.

If Obama had been true to his word about foreign policy during the Democratic primary/caucus portion of the campaign, I wouldn't care that he flailed. But because he is such a hawk now I think he still has some explaining to do as to why he couldn't put the most minimal skin in the game back in 1981 when his country asked him for a very small bit of exposure.

That was heavy, I know. So let me lighten it up by recommending a fun literary site (Terry Southern's) and one amusing piece of classic gonzo journalism "The Heavy Put Away Or A Hustle Not Wholly Devoid Of A Certain Grossness, Granted."
