LIVE spelled backwards

Staying with what I was trying to assert in CAN U DIG IT via my subtle reference to David Hume (how many yawl picked that up – slappz , BuelahMan's, Jackie, love babz , Curious, Badtux and Kelso not included, LOL), I have come to the conclusion that some folk just cant deal with kindness and even hate those that are kind? Albeit I have yet to thoroughly ponder this, I have made some cursory judgments regarding the aforementioned thesis. So I will attempt to give my take on such as a function of life and as well as living.

Hume’s (1711-1776) major philosophical works to me was Enquiries concerning Human Understanding although I know some would suggest A Treatise of Human Nature or Dialogues concerning Natural Religion. In summary he wrote about cognitive attributes of human behavior in terms of philosophical naturalism (my purview and I may be wrong). I think he may have been responsible for the dramatic change in Kant’s view of the world which suggested in essence that our own individual representation of things is what provides meaning and perception (I may be wrong on this too). But if not, I would venture to say that this is how I see evil. Not as a man with a red three piece and a pitch fork, but rather the representation of such.

Personally I have had a lot of good and a lot of bad things happen to me. More good than bad and even with the bad, I have always been able to find something good out of it. Truth is some folks can’t deal with bad and even worse cannot connect their actions and how they treat others to the negative outcomes in their personal experiences. They will continue to do wrong per say, treat others as they themselves do not desire to be treated and even worse, build upon lies until they have no way to control what they have amassed.

So caught up in themselves and their selfish attributes, they evince the me first position and are often so needy that they cannot see or observe or even respect the needs of others. So when others are kind and caring regardless, it festers more mean spiritness within in them because they desire others to hurt as they do, when they should desire not to hurt and focus on being considerate and caring. Yep, this is what I get when I try to understand meanness and hatefulness in others. I realize the true object of such is themselves.

To put it bluntly, evil is just live spelled backwards. Those that are afraid to accept the cards they are dealt, and fail to love themselves, are more likely than naught to be reflective of evil, for they, in my humble opinion are simply afraid to LIVE, or see their lives as a blessing.

Thanks. I wouldn’t consider myself brilliant, but I am flattered. And I must confess, I have only read a short commentary on Kants critique or pure reason written by A. C. Ewing.

Hey Torrance, thanks for stopping by earlier.

I wish evil could be defined so easily, it would offer some explanation to some of the horrific acts reported in the news that disturb me to my core.

In the early '80s not a week would go by that we did not learn of another child killed in Atlanta. One man was convicted, many suspect more were involved. Which would be more evil, the lone psychopath or the well organized group?

At what point does psychosis become evil?

Susan Smith drowns her sons by pushing her car into a lake with the boys strapped in their seats. Alysha Green coaxes her children into a closet, then lights them on fire. Andrea Yates drowns her children in a bathtub. Every day we hear more about fathers and mothers killing their own children.

I will not be able to sleep tonight a visions of what these children went through in their last moments fill my thoughts.

How does a twisted mind get to the point where it is okay to hurt children? It has to be more than mean spiritness and hatefulness.

For the little evils, the kind we run into in our day to day lives, I think you are spot on. But I do believe there is a larger evil out there, an evil that can change hearts and bend wills. Rare, but there.

BuelahMan said...

Even more love...

You are cool, brother.

In your essay, you describe attributes of a narcissistic personality, as well.

In your description, you could have been talking about two people in my family... which makes it hard to consider "evil" in the pitchfork sorta way.

Evil, imo, is someone who can only consider themselves in all circumstances; to hell with those around.

All evil shit that happens is due to this mentality, I believe. People starve in places not because food is unavailable, but because someone is not allowing those people to have food that IS available (we throw shit away all the time in this country... perfectly good shit... ever hear of dumpster divers?)

I can't understand it well enough to change it and in the case of my family, I just stay away to avoid the pain and theft.

Seven said...

You are kinda sorta there with Kant.

Ummm...I feel you on your perception of evil. Some folks are so unhappy with themselves that they desire seeing someone in a position that is worse of than him or herself. It has been said that it is in human nature that we think of the "I" first. However, you will find that their are many who will compromise him or herself to satisfy the needs of others. Maybe that is a result of how folks are conditioned to think...to compromise to please others.

Thinking of your own needs is not a bad thing unless you are hurting someone. I wouldn't recommend that anyone compromise or risk their own happiness for anyone, especially someone who is totally disrespctful.

There are a number of factors to consider when thinking of folks and their disturbing behavior. Self-hate may be the root of the problem. Folks can't radiate happiness if they don't know it or humble themselves to embrace it.

sista gp said...

...Truth is some folks can’t deal with bad and even worse cannot connect their actions and how they treat others to the negative outcomes in their personal experiences. They will continue to do wrong per say, treat others as they themselves do not desire to be treated...

If a person has behaved in this manner their entire life, how are they to know how to be different? Is this behavior genetic for them?
Should they be considered evil if they do not know how to be any other way?

Lovebabz said...

I know in every relationship, in every moment, we teach either to love or fear. As a teacher you know that to teach is to
demonstrate. As we demonstrate love towards others, we learn that we are lovable and we learn how to love more deepley. As we demonstrate fear or negativity, we learn self-condemnation and we learn to feel more frigthened of life...a course in miracles.

You know I believe there is only love or fear. I do not concern myself with evil. If you look for evil you will find evil. But if you look for love you will find love. Yes there are heinous things done, and there is no end to the level of selfishness in the world and in our lives. I am stunned often at man's inhumanity to man. But I know for sure that love prevails. That all those evil things exist where love does not. Evil exists I am convinced to caution us that we are operating from a place that has no love for life, earth, spirit, GOD.

To love one's self is a tough road to walk. It requires you to fully see yourself without the trappings of beauty and desire. But as a spiritual being existing only to love and be loved. Only existing to be a blessing upon the world.

I rather like Descartes:
Thought cannot be separated from me, therefore, I exist (Discourse on the Method and Principles of Philosophy). Most famously, this is known as cogito ergo sum (Latin: "I think, therefore I am"), or more aptly, "Dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum" (Latin: "I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am"). Along the same lines as Hume except I like the influence of a God consciousness in his philosphy.

You hit the nail on the head.

I once had a friend who felt she couldn't trust me around her man because the truth is no one could trust her around their man. People like that know they do wrong so they automatically think and prepare for others doing it to them. They're always on the defense and seem to live to get you before you get them. And if you don't act just like them then you think you're better than them or you're phoney and a fake.

I honestly think evil people don't believe anyone is nice. They're just evil on the back-burner waiting for their moment to surface.

Sad.

Torrance: This post was absolutely SICK! In the Canadian hockey fan sense, meaning "exceptional," of course.

I have to get you and The Gunslinger together when he gets back to Athens.

See, Torrance is absulutely right but it presents an ethical or even moral dilemma at times.

There are few tools as powerful or as indtimdating as kindness. If you are kind of heart and spirit and generous and you REALLY feel it inside, you are a very threatening person indeed. Ghandi and Mandela, of course are the apotheoses of this idea but it's just as true in daily life.

If you go out of your way to be kind or to help a stranger in trouble or just to deal with your own disappointments with a little laughter, you are scary. No, you can't stop a bullet or beat up five guys, but you are scary.

When you are kind and mean it, you are telling the world that YOU DON'T GIVE A FUCK. And once someone recognizes that in you, they are scared because they very much give a fuck about money or power or image or ego. And if they think you don't care about those things they think you are (a)crazy (b) have nothing to lose (c) dangerous because of (a) and (b).

I was lucky enough to have been raised in a very loving home and for some reason have never been cursed with materialism despite my success in life. I always look for the best in people (which The Gunslinger says is one of my strengths and weaknesses) and I NEVER COUNT PENNIES.

But I confess to having USED this in the pursuit of private gain. I also confess to my inability to stop myself for using it for private gain in the future. I can come up with a lot of fancy justifications for this that'll sound literary and correct but all merely justifications.

Here's one. If you are ambitious and want to establish some dominance over your environment there are two ways to do it: (1) brute force (2) brains and kindness. I chose (2) because it suited me and it worked.

I'm going to spend the rest of my sentient life wondering if that's really kindness or merely a more deeply finessed way of hustling.

torrance, EVIL offers a collection of letters that can be ordered into several words and endless amounts of speculation.

EVIL -- LIVE -- VILE -- VEIL

However, it's clear to me the definition of "evil" is way too subjective for much analysis. Even "good" or "bad" are tough to define once we look beyond our own noses.

Meanwhile, you said: "...some folks can’t deal with bad and even worse cannot connect their actions and how they treat others to the negative outcomes in their personal experiences."

On one level the preceding depicts "hubris", but on another level it's a warm-up for the criminal justice system. Where does this moral blindness get its start? That is the question?

You added:

"They will continue to do wrong per say, treat others as they themselves do not desire to be treated and even worse, build upon lies until they have no way to control what they have amassed."

Who are the perpetrators? Who are the victims? And what should the victims do?

Aunt Jackie said...

okay once again Kelso rocks my world with this quote right here!

"I'm going to spend the rest of my sentient life wondering if that's really kindness or merely a more deeply finessed way of hustling."

But back to the matter at hand, this was the topic of conversation within my spiritual community lately and it was offered that the difference between an evil person and a good person is the equivalent to being sleep or awake.

That each of us has within us the capability to go either way in thought or action but it's a matter of which direction we allow ourselves to be pulled, and/or what level of consciousness we are awake to.

Pure evil can be so much as a deep sleep from the consciousness of humanity. An evil person can be viewed as someone who is asleep to their own greater good, someone who has yet to unlock their personal power and capabilities and is still operating at a low level.

I'm with Lovebabz, as a lover of the book, A Course in Miracles, I too believe that is only love and fear and fear of love is often what manifests itself as evil doing...in my humble opinion.

Pure Evil for me would be considered acts of genocide, random acts of violence, the mass slaughter of Mexican women of Juarez that continues to go un-noticed by many, what's happening in Dafur, what's really going on at Gitmo, serial killing, and countless other atrocities against humanity.

if we take a step away from the "I" and take a step closer to the "I Am" which is the interconnectedness of humanity and us as humans we would know individually and collectively that acts of evil are truly on acts against ourselves, the collective and individual self.

The "evil" woman who slashes a man's tires in a fit of rage is truly destroying her life in the process. The leaders of genocide are destroying themselves, creating disharmony within humanity and themselves.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

OK, it's late and I've still got 2 out of 3 kids awake, so this is going to be quick, but I promised I'd be back. I enjoyed reading the discussion. Yep, some things are clearly evil, and others... it gets blurry. I don't know who to blame for the social evils.

Who lets 35 millions orphans fend for themselves in Africa without blinking an eye? Who lets an entire generation of adults die of diseases that could be prevented or at least controlled with proper access to the drugs "developed" countries take for granted? Who do we blame as we all ignore Haiti while the country implodes with food so expensive only the rich can eat, and the children of Haiti eat mud cookies to survive? Who do we blame for the total destruction of Iraq? I could go on. Of course.

It is all so mind-boggling. I don't like to think about evil and injustice, but I do. I have no answers. I guess we are all to blame, for allowing it.

So, what do we do? The only thing I'm doing right now is trying to raise my kids the best I can, so that maybe they can be part of the solution rather than exacerbating the problem. It's a tiny drop in a huge ocean.

Things really do go awry when people fail to accept the cards they are dealt. It's true. That would explain some of the most horrific acts done by humankind.

It kind of reminds me of the Shakespearean concept of the tragic hero...

no_slappz said...

waiting for zufan:

If you need to place the blame, then you can put most of it on the shoulders of governments.

About 1 million children die EVERY YEAR in Africa because the governments of African countries do NOT provide CLEAN WATER to citizens.

Many more Africans die from diseases that are almost non-existent in the US and Europe.

What makes the difference? Government.

Haiti? Same problem. In Haiti's 200-year history, there have been about 200 governments. Obvoiusly, every one a failure.

As for Iraq. You are mistaken. It is evolving rapidly from a country of misery into a nation of potential. Iraq is selling 2 million barrels of oil a day for $130 a barrel. That money goes to Iraq, whether you believe it or not. Oil revenue can finance the development of a prosperous Iraq, if the idiot muslims can stop shooting themselves in both feet.

It seems they have started to get the message.

On the other hand, Robert Mugabe has not. And he won't. He will single-handedly destroy Zimbabwe, creating and multiplying the misery of virtually everyone remaining in that failing country.

torrance, you wrote:

"Slapz to compare the health history of Africa with the US can only be accurate if Africvan colonized Europe and took them to africa to wok for free"

Why would you stop the discussion of mass death in Africa with some pointless requirement to frame the discussion with a hypothetical arrangement?

It is a FACT that a million children under the age of 5 die every year in Africa from drinking dirty water. It is also a FACT that NO children die from drinking dirty water in the US.

What accounts for the difference? The answer: Government. Democracies put a high value on human life, and part of that value is demonstrated by laws regarding public health -- clean water, sewers, waste disposal, disease control, etc.

Non-democracies don't bother with these issues. If necessary, non-democratic governments allow do-gooders from around the world to donate their time, expertise and technology. But the non-democratic governments otherwise do nothing to provide basic human services. The leaders are too busy ripping off the countries to worry about the people.

You said:

"And as far as iraq, the only way they will have a unified government if for the US forces leave, cause we unstablized it belive it or not"

You seem to equate a population living under the thumb of a dictator with "stability." On that basis, North Korea, Cuba and Iraq under Hussein are your idea of model countries. But people living in those countries have had other ideas. They want to get out.

Meanwhile, it's hard to call a democratic government "unified."

The point of democracy is to govern by civilized debate. But that's not a prescription for a "unified" population.

In Iraq, the sunnis and shiites have to learn the skill of civilized debate instead of depending on force and fear to run the country. The troublemakers are muslims, not the US.

Very good insight. Anytime a child of god expresses judgement, they send a message of lack to the universe. Most insecurities if not all of them are rooted in childhood experiences; although many of us do not remember or recognize this. I've met some really insecure people in my life, in fact, I think I draw this type because of my nurturing essense - I've noticed that these people always felt insecure in their environment as children; We need to not ever make our children feel less than, unstable, or doubting of our love for them - We need to ensure they feel protected in the home; This will stop the cycle of evil and insecurity that we so often see in society today. Again, thanks for the insight and message. Keep it up! Peace, Light and Love to you and yours . . . CordieB.

This is a lesson I've also recently learned, and it hit home for me when I started blogging because nowhere is this principle as apparent as on the Internet. I guess due to the faceless environment, people who might've suppressed their bitterness in other circumstances feel free to let it all hang out.

I based my blog on the humanistic perspective that most people are trying to live basically ethical lives and care about other people, their welfare, and their feelings.

Not so. The longer I've blogged, the clearer it's become, via the response to my own blog as well as through my research at other blogs and message boards, that not everyone shares the same intrinsic values. There are people out there--and plenty of them--who simply DON'T CARE whether others suffer or whether they themselves contribute to that suffering. In fact, they seem to ENJOY provoking, insulting, degrading, and hurting others.

Here's a case in point: As I was researching the business of blogging, I came across a well-respected pro blogger who wrote a piece on taking the time to thank StumbleUpon readers who bookmarked her posts. She said that it wasn't just about forming connections but about doing the right thing and spreading the love. Well, you wouldn't have believed the invectives that were hurled at this woman in response! About half the commenters on her post trashed her for having the nerve to suggest that taking up space in someone's inbox with her gratitude was the right thing to do. How dare she try to repay a kindness with a kindness?

The bottom line is you're right. There are people out there who just don't have good hearts, and their numbers seem to be on the rise.
