pressed associations

Yo, on the real, I wanted to post something else. I mean I still have Recess-is-on and this Billy I wrote a few weeks ago called pomegranate p***y. But I will drop them sooner or latter. Any how, I’d like to thank my folk at Bucknaked politics and Poor and stupid for the impetus for this. I mean, I read blogs, not just so-called black blogs. The problem is that politics to me is more than just the Election and Barack Obama.

As such, a blogger that is, the media serves a major role in how I get mad at shit and re-evaluate what they regurgitate to me under the auspice of news and information.

If you aint heard, the Associated Press (AP) has decided to give the business to bloggers who reference (not publish) their news reports. Even direct quotes from folks that they don’t even own – LOL.

The way I see it, they should be happy folks linking to they bitch ass on line because it increases their exposure. Nothing I write comes from them with the exception of stories I may get from them that I provide a direct link to their site.

But again this is the age of the fk boy or as one blogger called it the bitch man, for they are complaining about DIRECT quotes ranging from 39 to 79 words – a paragraph. I just don’t see why they get to make or define what fair versus excessive usage is? The AP aint the courts and last I heard the courts define laws and not a single media conglomerate. I just say face it folk, this is the new media jones. Yawl basically obsolete with the exception of quote feeding. I mean that’s what yawl do for them 1500 plus newspapers yawl get loot from. I’d figured they would be better served exposing the 2 U.S. senators, the two former Cabinet members, and the former ambassador to the United Nations who got point waived and lender fee waived loans from Countrywide Financial. But why pick on Senators Christopher Dodd (chairman of the Banking Committee) and Kent Conrad, of North Dakota (chairman of the Budget Committee and a member of the Finance Committee) , or former U.N. ambassador and assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke when big fish like no named bloggers can be thrown in the frying pan? But then again, what do I know?

Folk: I need that stack, if u aint heard Celtics won

Yes!! My Celtics won. You betta recognize!! LOL.
Anyhoo AP is bugging! I guess the point of it is understandable but I'm surprised they went that far with it as to sue a blogger... SMH

Why do people feel this is so much a black and white thing? Probably because it's the surface- easiest thing to discuss. What worries me is when Barrack's wife is saying stuff like, "this is the first time in years I've been proud of my country", or something to that effect. That stuff need to be hushed.

On another note, Celtics kicked that ass!

paisley said...

i am personally ashamed of the AP for showing its sorry ass over this... have bloggers become such a force to be reckoned with that they have to pull us back into the proverbial pot???

or have they all the sudden realized,, reporting news is not brain surgery???? and if you give a million monkeys a keyboard... eventually one of them will write a column suitable for publication in the new york times????

Anonymous said...

I can kind of understand their point about the issue of context, but good grief--since when have they really given a shit about context? Are they now the Context Police???

Fair? What's that. It's a laugh, that's for sure.

What hypocrites.

They need to get over themselves.

Would you settle for an apple? I'm all out of stacks.

now you know, they always have to find some way to rain on our parade.

i think that bloggers are a threat because they can say and do what the want when they want to...there is no majro media corporation behind what they say...so they do feel threatened but when you feel that way as my momma says, keep your enemies close don't push them away and piss them off...now we are pissed off which will inturn be more of a headache for the AP...focus on the "news" and let us do what we do

DivaJood said...

That AP would even consider suing bloggers takes frivolous lawsuits to a new low. I mean, people cannot afford to fill their cars to drive to work - people cannot afford health care. Who gives a rats ass if a blogger links to an AP story? Jerkwads.

As much as I love Phil Jackson, I cannot forgive him for leaving the Chicago Bulls. So, go Celtics.

But it is baseball season. Chicago Cubs are the best team in baseball, and all is right with the world of sports.

Christopher said...

The AP is fucked up big time and I hear they've backed down.

That's a shame. I would love it if they came after me and my little, ole' non-commercial, not-for-profit blog and gave me shit.

This would give me stuff to blog about for months and months and I would do my utmost to tear them a new a-hole.

Tamar said...

Im so happy for the celtics! But that foaming at the mouth during the interview was killing me last night!

Kofi said...

I forgot about the Celtics until the game was over. Very happy for them.

The AP is just having sour grapes. The Internet (along with declining newspaper circulations and sagging news ratings) is just pulling down their product's value.

Perhaps the newspaper model is outdated and should be reconstructed as an editorial blog online? Oops, too late, non-news people figured that out already.

The Jaded NYer said...

What? oh jesus, give me a freakin break!!!

well let the AP come at me; I got something for them...

yeah Boston kick Kobe back down on his seat. lol... not a hater but he needs to just keep his butt on the bench...

I try not to follow them dumb@ss whatever the heck is going on...

A.u.n.t. Jackie said...

Well considering that bloggers, some of which who are pulling in millions of dollars are using AP as a source without paying a dime, it comes back to dollars and cents.

how would any of you bloggers feel if someone took your work to make millions and you made nothing?

bloggers are bridging the gap between journalism and sensationalist media stories especially in the world of celebrities. I know this cuz I know bloggers making millions.

So unless you are pulling in a 6 figure income in advertising and getting 10 million hits a day, I don't think they are talking to you specifically...

But then again I could be wrong.

Celts!!!!! YAY!!! I was rooting for em Torrance, I saw my first B-ball game at the original Boston Garden.

As for AP, its about greed as in money. They want us to pay to use them.

No way..there are other news sources out there and this site is very good at giving you alternative media sources:

This bs makes my ass itch...

I think the AP's problem is going to be that it just isn't enforceable. Once we send something into cyperspace, it really isn't just ours anymore. I try to remember that...

Sure, politics is more than Obama, but that said, "Go Obama!!"

Wish I could Zufan to say "O-ba-ma" like some of those cute little you-tubers, but she's just not working with me on this one. :)

Unknown said...

The problem with the AP bullying is that the DMCA allows them to do just what they are doing. I wrote up a post about how full of bs the entire The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is. Your guilty until proven innocent. It makes you prove your innocence, not the usual way we do things here in the U.S. is it?

I am glad the Celtics won because I really don't like the Lakers at all! The Associated Press is just pissed because they don't have the same weight they used to. Black bloggers in particular have been going strong, especially as it relates to this years election.

I feel they should be glad more viewers are linking to their arts -more viewers means more money from sponsors. If they shut it down; they will quickly find a way to open it back up. This won't be enforced heavily; or it will be enforced biasly. Bloggers rule the information line - It's the Peyton Place of World Events! AP need to recognize this is a battle not worth winning! Peace, Light and Love, CordieB.

Unknown said...

Yeah... they trying that same ole' napster ish!

Shut us down.... Bit it won't work!

msladyDeborah said...

I am planning to do some studying up about the subject of the AP and bloggers. I saw this earlier this week and it has been a must study about in on my to do list.

You are absolutely right about the depth and diversity of politics. There are some bread and butter rights issues that have to be kept in focus no matter who is in leadership.

I believe that AP has become acutely aware of the powerful impact of blogs in our society. It would be interesting to know how much direct readership AP has lost to the internet. I read a lot of different news papers on line. Some intentionally and others by link or topics.

All the buttons went off inside of my thoughts on this one. Does current copy right laws cover internet copy and usage? And if AP is successful with its attempt, what will that mean to bloggers?

Mizrepresent said...

Say what? Shutting bloggers down, can't be done, we are the NEW SHIT!

You heard!

Jackie E. said...

Boo to the Celtics!!!! Oh well, my Lakers will have to try again next year!

As for the whole AP situation goes, they are really outta control for trying to make such a stipulation. It really seems to defeat the whole purpose of giving news, if you can't then, regardless of how, refer to said news. Just plain dumb if you ask me!

enigma4ever said...

The celtics were amazing..( I have been waiting forever for them to do this...I saw them all those years ago...doesn't seem that long ago...) anyways...I don;t even mind that they knocked the cavs out...

about the AP, I am not so shocked....they are pissed...Bloggers are changing how news is reported talked about and it is no longer "for sale", kind of ruins the whole propaganda angle....and damn- those bloggers ALL talk to each other- that is what the corprotized news people never ever wanted...we are supposed to b e sitting at home all feared up....we blew the fearmongering angle of this whole era....Good for us..

great post...

Sista GP said...

For a blog that has financial gains, seems it would be fair if the entire copied text was a link to the original. And each article with a percentage limit on the number of links/words to published articles belonging to others.

Curious said...

I haven't read all the comments, but I'm going to catch a different bus right now. I know that I have similar thoughts to Aunt Jackie's, so forgive me if it's been said before.

I think that if I wrote for a living, I would really be upset if someone increased their own worth by taking my work without pushing any sort of benefit my way. If I were AP and I had to pay for staff and whatever other expenses they have, I would be even more upset that someone was using our product for their own advantage and thereby making us lose readership or viewership and thus revenue from advertising and or subscriptions.

In otherwords I think everyone, real or virtual like corporations, should have a right to their own property and they should be allowed to protect it.

Keli said...

The problem is that politics to me is more than just the Election and Barack Obama.
-Say it…please say it AGAIN! These nouveaux politicos are giving me heachaches…it’s nice that people want to get involved…but it takes more than voting for a black man to show your involvement, and I have not come across to many folks (outside of blogland) that are informed…and actually, I have not found too many of “us” whose opinions I respect in regards to the matter…but that’s me.

I don’t know if the AP truly has any premise to act on this…as you stated, the courts set laws…and if the information is on the internet, it is considered public domain.

Tera said...

BTW...interesting conversation going on over at my place. I'm interested in your input ;-)

Anonymous said...

Damn, I did not AP was tripping like that. But I don't know why I am surprised. I AP and many other major media outlets are afraid of bloggers, maybe they consider us a threat.

torrance,

Regarding AP -- anyone reprinting AP's news stories is STEALING their product.

Personally, I don't care. BUT, that's what it is. Even though it might seem that AP news is free, it is not. Websites pay for content and/or advertisers pay for eyeballs. But any way you cut it, AP is not a volunteer organization and is therefore not expected to provide FREE news to anyone who wants to use it for personal gain.

Of course people copy stuff every day. It's impossible to police the whole Internet, so nothing will happen to bloggers pasting AP stuff on blogs that are barely noticed.

Big picture, if someone posted a book on the Internet, you can be sure readers would download it for free before going to Barnes & Noble to buy it.

As for Dodd, well, I believe his story; he didn't realize there was anything extraordinary about the rate he received from the mortgage company.

However, it says something about his gullibility that he didn't realize Countrywide was attempting to buy his good will with a good deal.

On the other hand, I'll bet many borrowers got rates similar to his.

All-Mi-T [Thought Crime] Rawdawgbuffalo said...

no slappz
I agree it is stealing but quoting and providing a source is called referencing
And Dodd is not stupid. Hope that is not the way he approaches politics (not reading the fine print)

But alas we agree RE countrywide LOL

heather said...

you know, i've really got to stop reading your stuff when i'm already pissed off. ;-)

All-Mi-T [Thought Crime] Rawdawgbuffalo said...

Heather
Im sorry, pls forgive me hon

no_slappz said...

torrance, with regard to Senator Dodd's mortgage -- none of the news coverage has given the interest rate on his loan.

Without that major piece of information, it's impossible to know if he received a bribe in the form of a rate that was below the market, or if he is a borrower with perfect credit who got the best deal his credit score warranted.
