take note

Point of Order: Jamming that Chrisette Michelle (ironically) - if I have my way.

A few weeks ago, maybe a month, I made reference to males who wear wife beaters over they azz as if they were draws. I don’t want to seem like I am hyper critical of African American men (although I am), or that I pick on us moreso than the sisters (but I do); I do want to say something about Michelle Obama and a few reasons I think sister (all women really) should take note, and try to use her as a role model instead of folks like Keisha Cole or Beyoncee Knowles. Now these may not be true and are only my opinion of what I can gather since I have not met her personally.

1] She speaks well and is well read, but at the same time proffers the disposition that if had to, she could handle her’s anywhere.

2] She doesn’t abide by the traditional definition of Baller. Since the common definition seems to rule men in graduate and professional school, without gold-teeth and they draws showing as typically being un-baller-esque.

3] She does not seem to be the type of woman that would chase or be with another womans husband; or even better get with a man after she knows she is pregnant by another man.

4] She selected a man based on her understanding of family, and family values and not because he lavished her with Louis Vuitton or Gucci, but rather was impressed with his values, character, work ethic and intellect.

5] Swagger for her is not seen as some artifical material but rather as genuine honesty and compassion as expressed by respect, value and appreciation (as can be seen in the smiles of her kids and her interaction with others).

6] She knows her sports and has extreme dedication to her teams.

7] Her hair is one color, without extensions from horses or women living in India.

8] Five to one in a throw down, she could take Cindy McCain and Sara Palin in an Indian Death Cage Match

9] She can cook, and places nothing on this EARTH above her family, not even herself.

10] She got with her man not thinking what he could do for her, but what she could do for THEM. She is not the type to ask anyone to do for her what she cannot do for herself (take note of this ladies).

What better standard in a woman to look up too, outside of your mom or grandmom (in most cases)? If you can add more – feel free to do so. Just my two cents, so take that with ya. Good Day.

Now listeing to Goapele - First Love , I be jamming Jones.

LOL. And I agree with you on all points except for number 10... she DID get with him knowing what he could do for her... but she wasn't looking at material things. And this is very important cuz too often us sisters settle for the ordinary.

But she rocks. And I hope she gets in the WhiteHouse cuz she's a role model for young women of any hue.

I am glad that Obama and Michelle are positive role models for the youth. If they've never been inspired before they should be now. Who wants to look up to a basketball player or singer when you now see one of your own running to be President over the country? That's motivation for you!

LMAO @ her hair is all one color and hers. I think it is funny how a woman wears her hair somehow comes into play with who she is and her character. I mean some would down her because she relaxes her hair, but really hair does not a person make so I won’t get into that. Being a fan of hair and changing it often I guess means it would be pointless to get my Michelle O on, but hey even Oprah wears extensions from time to time. It ain’t about the hair it’s about what’s there ( that is the glamazon stance on not judging women for their hair choices)

I think that the thing that is most fabulous about Michelle to me is she is how she is and she knows who she is. She is comfortable in her own skin and grounded in what she believes and knows she believes what she believes because she believes it and not because it’s a party line or it’s what my family believes etc.

I also like Michelle because she has mastered the sexy yet appropriate vibe when it comes to her style. She manages to be all that and a bag a chips with out showing us what’s in that bag. Again I think that is being comfortable in who you are. Being the woman I am I noticed how Mrs. Mc Cain looked so Stuffed up. She wore suits that didn’t show her waist actually they looked to big. She had boxy cuts and pulled back hair. I for one glamazon that I am would appreciate some style and flare back in the white house. You know how Jackie and John usta bring it, oh yeah and good policy too. Style and sound policy! *lol* Not in that order.

Great post. I am a huge fan of Michelle O and a supporter of the O campaign.

However, I need to address point 7, because that statement is a bit harsh, particularly for someone like me.

I am a mother, living with postpartum heart failure and lupus. The drugs that I take to manage those two chronic illnesses to a point where I can mother my daughter and run a small biz, are very hard drugs. The kind that make your hair fall out every day. I am a good mother. I delivered my child through renal failure in a natural vaginal delivery, so that she could arrive here as perfect as she is now, knowing that my organs damaged after the fact.

I thank God and my doctors for referring me to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a non-profit of the hair products company that gives free wigs to women who have cancer or other chronic illnesses. I thank God for my Girl Scout troop who donated their hair to the Locks of Love Foundation, to provide wigs for children under sixteen, who are cancer and chronic survivors.

Having a healthy scalp...shoot...having a full afro would mean so much to many people. Hair extensions affords them at least the ability to walk among "the blessed" without having to feel more brave than they already are.

Thank you again, Torrance. :)

Ms. Go Getter said...

I definitely agree with you that Mrs. Obama should be placed in higher regard than your typical "role model" simply because what she values and how she handles herself is ideal in a sense. Love the list you put together!!!

A.u.n.t. Jackie said...

Hate to burst your bubble but Michelle has a few weave tracks in the back...all you have to do is follow her hair styles from the beginning of the campaign to see it.

As a woman with a weave who wore my hair natural most of my life I would take offense but then again if a man is shallow enough to judge a woman by what she does with her hair...he's simply not my kinda of guy.

Not withstanding the fact that she got herself an Ivy League educated man, while she herself was an Ivy League Student I think she knew what kinda man she was getting before she committed her life to him.

Not to discount the other numbers, but 4, 5, & 10 are my favorite. Being drawn to someone's character is significant. So many women are paper chasers and/or denigrators. She seems like a nourisher. I really like her more than her husband--a black woman supporting her man.
Though sometimes her hair does look a little Condee Rice like (i.e. press & curl w/grease).

Voters are electing a president and vice president. The spouses of the elected candidates mean very little, unless the spouses have their own political ambitions.

I can only think of one spouse like that. But she's no longer running.

Michelle may have her good points, but frankly, in the US, a First Lady has a better chance of being popular if she owns a huge beer distributor.

Michelle was almost as visible as Obama through much of the primary season. Then she disappeared until the Democratic convention.

In other words, the Democratic Party strategists realize she's likely to shoot her mouth off again, if given a chance.

Her early statement about having no pride in America until her husband was running for the presidency is going to come back and haunt Obama's campaign.

She always seems ready to get into a verbal sparring match with anyone, and people who know her well have been quoted saying exactly that. It's good that she's quick to respond, but it brings headaches, as Joe Biden learns and relearns on a regular basis.

In fact, on that topic, Biden appears to have a learning difficulty.

Meanwhile, I am not clear on what Michelle does for work. She's well paid, but it's hard to know why.

Miz Cheekz said...

yeah, Michelle Obama is the woman of the year. i am definitely a fan of hers.

KELSO'S NUTS said...

JONES: I know a lot of people here take exception to it when I bag on America, but I certainly have no plans to stop. And if I ever considered stopping for a minute, all I need to is think of the fact that MICHELLE OBAMA is considered a NEGATIVE in Barack Obama's campaign!

I agree completely with what you wrote about her. I think if you were to design the "ideal American woman" you surely couldn't do much better than Michelle Obama.

Even when Barack Obama irritates me for taking all of these retrograde stands on important issues, Michelle Obama never does.

I remember the "controversial" Larry King interview. I turned off the TV thinking that she had been pretty fuckin impressive. I was truly amazed that the universal commentary on her was that she'd made some colossal gaffe. I didn't even notice that "America...proud" bit when she said it. Sound to me actually like kind of some pro-America palaver she had to throw in at the end to cover all the bases! Shows you where I live!

In reviewing all of the convention speeches, I think hers was the best not for any particularly inspiring phraseology or punchy delivery even those she's an excellent speaker on all the usual criteria.

What made that speech so good was that she went in with a really vile burden of having in some way to APOLOGIZE to the American people and show the people that she didn't have 3 arms or 4 legs or whatever. She couldn't possibly have LIKED having to do that and I'm pretty sure on some level she was pissed-off about it, but she found some way to give the public all the saccharine they needed while doing it her way and having a lot of fun in the process.

And she was no slouch in advocacy for her husband's credentials and ability to lead.

There's been all this talk about her "elitism" and "uppity" this and that. I have to ask all of the Michelle Obama haters if they'd particularly mind if their daughters went to Princeton and Harvard Law and was on the P-ship track at Sidley & Austin? And then decided to do public interest law instead?

It probably isn't a tight fit to compare her with Sarah Palin (lucky for the latter) but it's hard not to. So, here we are in the aftermath and the press is carrying on like schoolgirls having seen Justin Timberlake following Palin's vacuous and vicious speech. And Michelle Obama is back to having to DEFEND herself for having gone to Princeton and Harvard.

JONES:

Though it will mean nothing to anyone here, it is about a woman in politics and it means a lot to me.

This past Sunday Balbina Herrera beat Juan-Navarro easily for the PRD nomination for the presidency of Panama.

This makes her the overwhelming favorite to become the third concurrent female head-of-state in a South American POWER country. The others are Dona Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of Argentina and Dona Michelle Bachillet of Chile.

All of the three women are exactly the kind of centrist pro-business, civil libertarians which have become kind of the default position for the world's other capitalist states. She's got a tax policy that's out Ron Pauls Ron Paul, a social policy like Kucinich's and a balanced budget. Plus, she'll inherit the world's largest current "green" project in absolute size and the largest ever pro-capita (the bay cleanup).

A lot of voters will consider this point and pick McCain as a result.

She has plenty of qualities. But she also spent 19 years in the pews of Reverend Wright's church. Moreover, she immersed her daughters in Wright's thinking.

By exposing her daughters to the indoctrinating powers of Wright, she has shown a disturbing lack of ability to judge character.

If Wright were not an America-hating preacher in a church, he would have had a role in the Nation of Islam.

I'll just throw this one open to everyone but can anyone explain to me what exactly was so BAD about Rev Jeremiah Wright?

I've seen the tapeloop on (Fox no less!) at least 15 times over and I still don't get the problem. If it was his saying "God damn America," that's maybe indelicate but it's not shocking. I've certainly heard many, many, White Republican business people say "God damn America" when something government-related they don't like has come up. The other problem was his suggestition that America brought the attacks of 9/11on itself. I don't necessarily agree with that but I do remember Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson saying the same thing exactly. At the very least, the attacks of 9/11follow a pattern of in-fighting among Royal Families you'll find throughout history. The fathers were business partners. The sons were enemies. That sounds like an evening of Shakespeare to me.

Wright, himself, is a Marine and is apparently very well educated and his Trinity Church while progressive socially launched way more business careers through networking opportunities adn social functions than it did careers in radical anti-Americanism by a factor of 10000s!

Unknown said...

Kelso,

First off, if anyone watched the entire sermon, which I did...they would see that Rev Wright was quoting a white Bush diplomat/employee when he said God Damn America.

I personally saw nothing wrong with Rev Wrights sermons..and I watched them all the way through. I wasn't enthralled however with his shtick at the Press Club in DC a couple of months back when Obama cut him loose.
