A good day to die

Preface: Good Luck to the Atlanta All-Stars 16u Baseball team (my son's traveling team). Only All African American team in the Smoltz-Grisson Wood Bat Tourney. They 18-2.

As I sit at home in my library I write this. To often, we fail to recognize via our selfish ways that each day we breathe or see the sun or rain that it is a gift. To often we miss out on accepting the beauty of the lives that we live and the bountiful blessings that we have for in our selfish ways, we think only of ourselves.

Today I have decided to live each day as my last, as if I have less than a year to live. I will get this business off the ground for the prosperity of my children. I will put in practice all involved in getting at least 5 books out before the end of the year. For I believe in creating my own reality and that time waits for no one and that if I think It I can do it – let it be written, let it be said, let it be done.

To many of us prefer to whine, cry, fuss, bicker and complain about shit that is really beyond out control. What we can control are our thoughts and as such, our dreams, which don’t mean jack if we don’t look forward and take the time to make them real. Too many of us segment our lives into years, days, months or even hours. Not folk hear, either I do it or I don’t. I won’t wait, I won wait for anything and if I want something or desire something best believe folk here will get it. We are not thankful for what we got.

I will not live my life to impress any one other than myself so when I die, I can say to myself that I was the truth. You see, I am observant, I walk around and see homeless folks pushing grocery baskets with their life belongings and I see the same folks sleeping under highways. When I go to a gas station, I may not like the high prices, but even without a job or income coming in I don’t fret. For I know I am not walking in a place where I have to worry about folk walking around with explosives tapped to their body that can take me and everybody else out. I know I am not sleeping in the rain after an earthquake because I lost my home. See I’m a realist and one living in a real world. So all I am saying is stop bitching when you don’t have if you cant acknowledge what you do have. Don’t wait or put things off, and certainly don’t make excuse, if you want something or some one get it. If you express desire show it and let nothing get in your way.

Sure voice what you believe you have earned and deserve. But when gifts are bestowed upon you, rather financial or in Idea, take advantage of the opportunity. Don’t complain or sulk. Get out and do. For if you wont do it for yourself nobody will. Not to mention when you have and don’t acknowledge such as a blessing, you become an adage – you don’t miss something until it’s gone

So this is for all yawl lame ass fakers (shit talkers) who say you want to start a business but are to scared to take your foot off of first base for you can not steal second without doing so. This is for all of you all who say or tell others you love them but don’t realize love is a verb, a corpus of actions that implicate such an expression. For those of you who say but do not place any action behind your words - true, the written word is powerful, but it is worthless without action. Don’t say you love me and send my son to war Mr. President, don’t say you love me and don’t comfort, kiss or assist me. Don’t say you want to write a book but don’t know what it takes to do such. Talk again is empty with out action. I don't care if it is a man or a woman you desire and you have one or a book you want to read. Live free or die. The present is a gift jones mane.

I know I wont. In fact I know I will. I will not ask anyone to do for me what I can do for myself. And those of us who do are merely folks that use others instead of standing on our own too feet. Especially if we only take and never give. So I will do what I print and think, for when I die, I and not others will understand I am the truth, the shit. So take this as motivation, for the way I see it, and maybe It I s the Creek Indian in me, it as any day is a good day to die. vote

You have an amazing ability to cut right to the chase. This is indeed inspiring on so many levels. You clearly understand and welcome the fact that all we have is this moment.

Because of you, I have taken on somethings that I have put off---dreams of long ago---just out of reach---so I thought. I imagine myself in conversation with you and I think what would the Man from Memphis do? And instantly I know. So your influence has already been felt in Connecticut. I have already talked about you in my circle of intimate friends. As an example of what a mind can do.

I do so admire your umcompromising stance on how to live, how to be, how to love.

I dig your swagger. I LOVE your swagger!

Well, I have to agree with you all the way on this one. My motto has pretty much been "start living or continue dying". I have no idea of the etiology of this. I assume some of it comes from having survived spinal menengitis with all my parts intact and thus feeling like I'm on sort of a free-roll. Maybe it was some of the lessons of my father and grandfather. Maybe it was the high expectations my family and my community placed on me, but I've always had a lot of gamble in me and other than summer jobs during high school and college, I've always been on the hustle whether gambling or building businesses or whatever. I even considered my academic life to be something of a hustle. There were no subjects I disliked, many I liked but I always treated it as a competition that I wanted to win. Even through grad school.

The fakery, I think, that galls me the most now is not so much peoples' complaints about their jobs yet without the balls to do what they love but people who say tomfoolery like they're going to LEAVE THE USA IF KERRY LOSES OR IF OBAMA LOSES. I HAD to leave because of a political thing and although I've made lemonade out of lemons, and had been discussing this for a few years with my attorney and doing lots of research and planning, exile is VERY stressful. And believe me, like the protagonist in Lethem's second novel, because my parents were both writers just starting out I didn't grow up with much and had to get streetwise in a hurry and learn Spanish as a little boy and all that crap. But as much as I liked to fuck around, I always put the schoolwork first because I was an ambitious little fuck. So, yeah I handle this fine and I enjoy it so much that I'm not in a big hurry to come back to the states, it is weird enough. That's for sure.

So, in a gesture of friendship from one hustler to another, I'm going to give you a terrific bar bet. Just listen to all the bullshit you'll hear about what so-and-so will do if the Superdelegates choose Clinton over Obama. Or if McCain beats Obama. Nobody ever does shit. So, set a timeframe for the person to accomplish whatever radical act he or she proposes to do if something "unfair" happens and bet them a wedge that they won't do it within that time frame. If you find 4 such bets, you record will be 4-0.

Stay cool in shul.

It never fails, every time I think I'm going to stop reading your blog, you have something to say that pulls me back in.

But this on, here, takes the cake. You are speaking to me. Because right now every aspect of my life is off and not being lived the way it should be. And I've been too busy wallowing in the misery of it to get up off my fat ass and do something about it.

So, I hear you. And I'm motivated by your words. Hell, even the picture you chose is calling to me - because of the many, many things I hate about my living environment, the one that bothers me the most is that I don't have space to have all my books out and easily accessible. Looking at those shelves of yours just makes me yearn.

So, I guess number one on my list is to get myself a home with lots of bookshelves.

its funny because i always wanted to be a vet and i have made up all kinds of excuses of why i couldnt do it: grades, bills, etc. etc. but you know what i really could be that vet if i wanted to. but i dont want to put up the fight or the struggle to do so. I am so afraid of failing that i just give up. with you writing this post I can now admit this to myself.

I dont fret on it though. i keep maintaing. i am blessed and i know when i make up my mind then i will go after that goal that i set for myself so long ago.

I aint gonna like Terrance this post really touched me. i visit your page and most of the time I dont leave a comment because sometimes I feel like you are on some level that I cant really touch but you know what I totally do relate to what you posted.

we all have a purpose in life and some of us achieve the goal set by God. some of us make it happen and some of us whine about what could have been.

She is always questioning why she does not have this, or can't obtain that...I had to let her's because she's all talk and NO action...start to stop talking and start doing...of course she was not too happy about that. But at this point of our lives...our life is nothing more than what we make of it.

So I guess I need to stop dragging my feet and finish this book...all though a collaborative effort, I have taken it upon myself to complete it myself, no time to waste, have to live in the present.

Very true, that's how I try to live my life too. I often ask myself 'if I only had 9 months to live, would I be spending it exactly how I'd like?' If I answer yes, then I know I'm on the right track. So now I live without the tension and stress of many because I have seen first hand how it can kill you.

I say to anyone if you are stuck around people who are complaining and not doing any thing you are with the wrong crowd!

I am surrounded by amazing folks who make me wanna achieve more and more and remind me on the regular it is possible!

I love this post. I read them all but may not respond to each one.

I don't always do as I want or follow through on things I want to do. But I do know one thing, I count all of my blessings. Sometimes I think we Americans have had things too easy for too long and we really don't appreciate or show gratitude for things we take for granted. I don't want to take those things for granted.

I may not have some thing... but man, I'm so very grateful for all that I do because its so much more than others can say.

"I will not ask anyone to do for me what I can do for myself". Just wanted to say I believe that but I feel it also gets me in trouble in dealing with men. Y'all want to feel needed. How do I ask a man to do what I can do for myself without using him or doing it just to make him feel needed. I know that's slightly off topic but I'd love for you to post on that one (smile).

Excellent post.

Live today, because tomorrow is not promised to you. Do what you can, set goals, work towards those goals, and what is out of your hands, deal with that adversary, and leave it out of your life.

I appreciate being able to do many things that the millions of black people who came before me were NEVER able to do, things I can accomplish that they would have suffered penalty of death if they attempted them.

I owe them a debt I can never repay, therefore, I never forget the hells they endured so that I can live life more abundantly.

I endeavor to live my life in a way that does not shame or insult their precious memory. What I can do, I do. What I have no control over, I don't sweat.

(Although there is one, itty-bitty, little, teenie-tiny thing I do need to learn. . . .

. . . .how to drive.

This year, and no more excuses.

Yep, I hear you on doing what you can, while you can.

On my job, I do it well with the best work ethic I can have, and yes, I get the lop-sided stares. But, I don't care---it is MY job, and I will do it better than anyone else there. I will do my work so well and so good, that I can SIGN MY NAME TO IT.

That is LIFE itself. Live it in a way that you can sign your name to it, on your epitaph, and in your life itself.

This and so much more is what I owe the many thousands gone. A life lived as much to the fullest as possible---a life that is a testament to their honor for enduring hells I can only dream of in nightmares---OR read of in books.

(Speaking of books---heck, you have as many books as I have!)

In the end, be what you can be; no shortcuts, no settling for less, in yourself---or anyone else. Seek the highest in yourself, and you will therefore seek the highest in others.

No one can do or live your life to your satisfaction but you.

Be the best.

Be the best woman.

Be the best American.

Be the BEST human.

(Guess it's that African in me that drives me to be so inspired ;)

Demetrius said...

Much love to your son's traveling team. (All AFRICAN AMERICAN TEAM) I played on traveling teams growin' up and being the only darker color was a common occurrence for me. It's good to know that diversity does exist in "America's Pastime":

This is a good topic man... Everyday meets each of us with things to be grateful for and things that just leave us dreading the very purpose of life, which is to live every day like it's the last. That is done with love as our guide, without it life has no purpose, without it strife becomes your place of rest. It is hard to maintain a love for a life that's so burdensome, it is hard to love the ones around you when many of them would rather hate you. We have to get up though and press through the stressful thoughts of wanting more and having less. It's very easy to wake up and have something to complain about, something to fight over, something to transgress towards, but we have to maintain hope in the acclaimed importance of being a good character. That is where the war on terror is, in our minds, in our wretched troubled hearts is where this hellish fate awaits us all torrance, but it should not be in anyone to go that route, even in the midst of much discord and injustice we should not venture down the same path that turned mighty men into eternal prisoners. Eternal glory is what we should all strive for, fight for and eventually die for. We should aspire to allow our loved ones to acknowledge us with a proud heart, to proclaim our names and our testimonies to those who desire to one day take up the same fight against this unjustified consolation of sinners who hold a rank of power above us in the flesh, they have no dominion over us in the spirit and they never will.~"These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."~ John16:33

Much love torrance, this topic truly does encourage a character like me who suffers the effects of a warfare that's intended to confine the man, deprive the man, break the man and eventually destroy the man.

2 Corinthians 4:8,9
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

It is a strange thing this journey we call life. For more than a year, each day I woke up, I never knew if I was my last or not. The odds were in my favor that it wouldn’t be, but you could never really know.

When I returned to a normal life I settled back into the routine. But I still remind myself the lesson I learned from my Father years ago. That is to make sure the best days of your life are not behind you, that they are indeed ahead of you. To do that, you start right now.

We may not be in the best circumstances in this nation. But there are people who live in circumstances that we will be blessed never to face or have to live through.

There must be something about being forty~something that creates major change in people's psyche.

I lost the presence of one of my sistah/friends around that time in my life. One of the things that still looms over my memory is all the things she had put of doing in the belief that there would be time for them later.

That prompted me to get up and do whatever I want everyday.

I would urge everyone to take a leap of faith! Do something that you want and enjoy the good times and the difficult ones as you journey on.

T: I'm not laughing out loud at all! I'm taking this as seriously as an ulcer. I've never read any of your books but what you've done on and with the blog is pretty remarkable. I can't imagine your fuller prose would not meet or exceed this standard.

Let's discuss it privately. I have a few questions and a few ideas.

I think I have your phone number in my inbox, if not I'll email you and you can send it to me again.

If you have skype we can do it that way, as well. I use a phone service that comes with my cable and internet and appears on US cell phones as being from all sorts of weird places in the US, so if you see a call from a number and place you don't recognize, it's me.

*sigh* Marry me? No? Okay...LMBO I thought of soooo much reading that. "Live free or die" the same advice I'd been trying to give my bff (and also trying to take myself). You're a great writer though. And I def. agree with Lovebabz, the e-swag is dangerous. LOL

Well goodness. I was trying to leave a comment and had to go thru so many other people to do Well hi there sir. I just wanted to say thanks for stopping by my blogspot and I wanted to return the love. A good Day to Die, is very deep, but oh so true. Like Alicia Keys sang, the present is a gift! Amen to that! I see you read a lot. So do I. I don't have a libray like your's yet, but I'm working on it. I to am writing a book, I'm a few chapters in already. But not to leave you a, but stop by again and I'll do the same. I live in Georgia to....maybe we can network one day.
